Sony Ericsson have finally come clean on their latest smartphone, and as expected it’s an Android flagship. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 – previously known as the Rachael and the X3 – is a Snapdragon-based touchscreen candybar, with a huge display, 8.1-megapixel camera and some “special sauce” in the shape of two homegrown applications – for communication aggregation and media aggregation – with a custom UI. SlashGear caught up with Sony Ericsson in London yesterday to take a look at the new smartphone, and find out why the company reckons this is the launch not only of the Android X10 but of a new “user experience platform”.

Sony Ericsson's Aino smartphone arrived in the UK earlier this month, but would-be buyers looking on enviously from the US are now able to sate their touchscreen desires.  The 8.1-megapixel handset has gone on sale online and at Sony Style stores in the US today, priced at $599.99 unlocked, offering a 3-inch 432 x 240 touchscreen, WiFi, 3G (UMTS 850/1900/2100) and Bluetooth.

Remember all the furore back in August, when Microsoft announced they’d locked up Netflix movie streaming for the Xbox 360 and basically told us it was an “exclusive” partnership?  Well, that exclusivity seems to have been short-lived; Sony have announced that from November Netflix subscribers will be able to stream content on their PS3.

It’s taken a while, but Sony Ericsson’s Satio and Aino cellphones are finally hitting shelves, at least in the UK.  The two touchscreen handsets were first announced back in May – you can see our hands-on videos with each after the cut – and aim to deliver both entertainment and communication.  The Aino (seen here in its bundled dock) can stream content from a PlayStation 3 via the Sony Remote Play system, while the Satio (previously known as the SE Idou) packs a 16:9 3.5-inch touchscreen and 12.1-megapixel autofocus camera.

iomega storcenter ix2 200 nasIt’s been a long time since we reviewed Iomega’s original StorCenter ix2 NAS, and the company have finally got around to updating the dual-drive consumer/small-office backup and media-sharing system.  The Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 keeps the compact footprint of its predecessor but boosts capacity – 1TB, 2TB and 4TB models are on offer – upgrade potential and green credentials.

Unlike the ix2, the ix2-200 has twin user-accessible drive bays, and they’re filled with low-power drives that are automatically spun-down when not in use.  The StorCenter also has DLNA media streaming, RAID 1 drive spanning for improved data security, three USB ports for plugging in external drives or webcams, and optional Bluetooth for wirelessly transferring files from mobile devices.

“Touch me, touch me” sang 80s legend Samantha Fox, “I want to feel your body,” and while the intentions of Sony’s new VAIO L Series of touchscreen desktops may be different, the sentiment is just the same.  Announced alongside the skinny VAIO X, the L Series is being pushed – like other big-screen all-in-one PCs in Sony’s past – as a hybrid HDTV and computer, though with its 24-inch 1920 x 1080 display, optional Blu-ray and optional TV tuners we suppose it does have more of a claim than most.  As for the touchscreen, that’s used not only for Windows 7’s multitouch functionality but to control Sony’s own Media Gallery DVR app.

Netgear have unveiled their latest home storage device, the Stora, which the company is positioning not only as a NAS backup but as a media-sharing hub.  The Netgear Stora takes two 3.5-inch SATA drives and connects via gigabit ethernet; there are also two USB 2.0 ports for sharing printers or plugging in external drives.  What makes it special, though, is its social network and device integration.

Sony’s PSP “minis” download games for the upcoming PSP Go are already prompting confusion, not least because of the company’s own guidelines for developers hoping to fast-track their submissions.  Sony has revealed its policies for PlayStation Network approval, including details on the “accelerated approvals process”; unfortunately, for titles to qualify for that process they must be single-player, have no network or downloadable content, and no peripheral support.

If only this were a desktop microwave-cum-coffee-machine, ideal for topping up your caffeine levels and heating up your harried lunches, but sadly it’s just Iomega’s latest NAS.  The Iomega StorCenter ix4-200d squeezes four SATA-II 3.5-inch drive bays into a reasonably compact footprint, promising RAID 5, 10 or JBOD setups and up to 8TB of standard storage.

Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai has confirmed that the company will continue to lose money on each of the $299 PS3 Slim consoles they sell, together with revealing that Sony’s motion-controller has been pencilled in for a release in spring 2010.  Meanwhile he also denied that, with the advent of the UMD-free PSP Go, we are seeing “the death of physical media”, pointing to the large percentage of the 100 countries Sony sells gaming products in that don’t have access to high-speed internet connections for downloads.
