By Vincent Nguyen on Wednesday, Aug 26th 2009 6 Comments

Ask any Mac owner and they’ll likely tell you the Apple allure is a game of two halves: the reassuring hardware and the slick, consistent OS. Apple is finally delivering their latest version of OS X, v10.6 Snow Leopard, adding a new coat of polish to the company’s software prowess. SlashGear has been testing out Snow Leopard over the past few weeks, and we’ve found that perhaps its most satisfying aspect is that it upgrades things both visibly and less obviously, rather than one or the other. The end of the week is here again and here we go with a rundown of some of the coolest stories we have seen this week. Monday marked the day the Asus Eee PC 1101HA went on sale in America. The rig is a netbook in name only; the beastie is expensive at about $430. The same day Gigabyte quietly unveiled the T1028X convertible touchscreen netbook. The device has a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and other than the screen, the rest of the machine is typical netbook fare.

sony vaioSony have admitted that certain models of VAIO notebook may be affected by the notorious NVIDIA “bump” material issue, which can see the GPU overheat and eventually break completely.  The nine model types on Sony’s list join the existing roll-call of faulty notebooks, which includes machines from Apple, HP and Dell.  In response, Sony are offering free repairs for affected VAIOs, and to extend the standard warranty (on the GPU alone) from the regular 12 months to four years in total.

No, not an NVIDIA Ion space-invader dive bombing a lurid netbook, but one of Point of View’s new Mobii ION 230 machines.  Based on Intel’s Atom 230 processor, a curious choice considering the single-core 230 is more usually a nettop CPU, the Mobii attempts to redeem itself by using NVIDIA’s Ion GPU along with the typical 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard-drive.

Reports of 17-inch Apple MacBook Pro visual artifacts and display glitches continue, with the latest suspicion being that the notebook’s heat management system, not the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GPU, could be at fault.  After the cut, NVIDIA’s statement to SlashGear on the issue, and the fan test results that suggest it’s poor cooling not the chipset that’s undermining the MacBook Pro.

fp fp fp 8800gtNVIDIA’s results for Q3 of the 2009 fiscal year were released this week and they show a significant reduction in revenue when compared to the same time last year. In fact, the drop is about 20% and can most likely be attributed to an $8.3 million charge that resulted from laying off 360 employees.
