spotify mobile for s60Streaming music-on-demand service Spotify threw the radio cat among the Nokia pigeons back in September, when it announced a S60 mobile client was on the way.  It’s taken a few months, but now that client has been released, bringing Spotify to more than thirty devices running the S60 OS; that’s not just Nokia handsets, either, since Spotify have made the necessary tweaks to get the app running on some S60 devices from other companies, such as the Samsung Omnia HD and the Sony Ericsson Satio.

One of the things that isn’t that great for me about my iPhone 3GS is that while improved this time around, the camera still isn’t that great. Sure, the camera on the 3GS is lots better than the camera on my original iPhone that was replaced by my new 3GS, but it is still very lacking.

Nokia have announced Point and Find, a new app for Nokia handsets which can recognize barcodes and cinema posters.  The software uses the phone’s camera, internet access and GPS to call up pre-programmed tags; that can then bring up local movie times, the ability to book tickets, and – eventually – price comparisons.

nokia n73 blackberry pearl 8100HTC, RIM, Palm, Nokia and Panasonic are among multiple cellphone manufacturers against whom a Texas company, Saxon Innovations, have filed complaints regarding alleged patent violations.  The case, which the US International Trade Commission (ITC) has decided to investigate following a vote on Thursday, suggests that various products from the companies use intellectual property first filed in three patents by AMD, and which was subsequently bought by Saxon in July 2007.  If the ITC finds in favor of the complaint, the manufacturers could be barred from importing their devices.

Nokia’s first touchscreen handset, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, has finally found its way to our doorstep, and we’ve been playing with it for a week or so now. That’s plenty of time to play around with all the available features, and a lot of our holiday shopping time went into this device. Codenamed the “Tube”, this handset brings a touchscreen element that Nokia has not really taken part in before. Being a mid-grade phone that is not aimed directly at Apple’s iPhone, how does it stack up?

mobile metrics free mobile market level data admobMobile advertising marketplace, AdMob, has released a report that shows growing Wi-Fi usage in the US and the UK.  Worldwide the iPhone requests grew 52 percent to 359 million in November to give the iPhone 6.3 percent of total requests and 9.9 percent of US requests.

nokia n97 portrait smallIt’s currently unconfirmed, but All About Symbian are reporting that the new Nokia N97 uses the same Texas Instruments ARM11 processor, with a higher clock speed, as the N95, rather than the newer TI OMAP 3 chip.  If true, this will come as a disappointment for anyone hoping the new flagship smartphone would take advantage of the OMAP 3’s super-frugal architecture and speedier ARM Cortex core.

Nokia’s Home Control Center was among the gadgets making an appearance at the company’s Barcelona expo today, and Electricpig caught a little in-person time with the setup.  Ostensibly a WiFi draft-n router, the Home Control Center box itself is actually a Z-Wave transmitter too, with 6GB of internal storage and intelligence to monitor temperature and other sensors and control heating and lighting accordingly.

Vuzix have announced availability of the AV310 Widescreen Video Headset in Europe, together with the new AV230XL which uses OLED displays for brighter, better contrast images despite requiring less power.   The AV310, which was launched in the US in September, produces a 16:9 image equivalent to watching a 52-inch screen, and is 3D capable; the AV230XL, meanwhile, is equivalent to watching a 44-inch screen from nine feet away.  Both are compatible with the iPhone and iPod, as well as other portable electronics such as DVD players, smartphones and PMPs.
