spotify mobile for s60Streaming music-on-demand service Spotify threw the radio cat among the Nokia pigeons back in September, when it announced a S60 mobile client was on the way.  It’s taken a few months, but now that client has been released, bringing Spotify to more than thirty devices running the S60 OS; that’s not just Nokia handsets, either, since Spotify have made the necessary tweaks to get the app running on some S60 devices from other companies, such as the Samsung Omnia HD and the Sony Ericsson Satio.

While we may continue to blast Qualcomm’s FLO TV standalone streaming TV handheld, we have no problem with manufacturers integrating mobile TV into their cellphones.  Nokia’s latest, the 5330 Mobile TV Edition, does exactly as its name suggests: packs a DVB-H digital TV tuner into a media-centric handset, complete with hardware music control keys, a 2.4-inch QVGA display and a 3.5mm headphones jack.

The Nokia 5230 is the Finnish firm’s attempt to cash in on the success – and shape – of the 5800 XpressMusic with a more budget-minded entry-level version, and going by gsmhelpdesk’s hands-on preview it sounds like they may be on to a winner.  The 5230 gets praised for its ease of use and sound quality, happily using a standard 3.5mm headphone socket rather than anything unpleasantly proprietary.

If the 2.5G of the 5530 XpressMusic doesn’t appeal, and you want both 3G and some PND goodness in your new touchscreen Nokia, then the company’s latest bundle may catch your eye.  The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition takes a standard 5800, subjects it to a few cosmetic tweaks, and packages it with Nokia’s car kit and lifetime drive and walk navigation with voice-prompts for Ovi Maps.

Nokia’s latest touchscreen XpressMusic handset has shown up for preorder on the company’s US site.  The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic slots neatly in beneath the 5800, and lack of 3G aside has met with positive reviews from early users, not least because of its nifty new homescreen (a demo video of which you can see after the cut); preorder customers also get a free Nokia MD-8 Bluetooth speakerset.

Sony Ericsson’s Satio has seen a few changes since its last MWC appearance (as the Idou), most of which have taken place on the inside.  Running the latest version of Symbian S60, complete with UI fettling from Sony Ericsson themselves, it’s now a harmonious and consistent OS with no glaring leftovers of its non-touchscreen past.

nokia touchscreen concept 223x263 customAfter yesterday’s suggestion that Nokia was considering using Synaptics capacitive touch panels for a future high-end cellphone, now comes word that the Finnish company has placed panel orders from Wintek.  Wintek already supply the resistive touchscreens used by the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic; now market sources in Taiwan are saying to expect more touchscreen devices to be at least announced from Nokia before the end of June.

No details of the handsets themselves have leaked as yet, and nor is it clear whether Nokia are ordering from several vendors simultaneously.  Sources claim that, despite reduced expectations for 2009 handset shipments as a result of poor Q4 2008 sales, Nokia nonetheless placed rush orders for cellphone components in March “and has actively resumed product development projects.”

Update: Synaptics point out that Wintek make panels (glass, PET) not capacitive sensors, and as such are not in direct competition with each other.  They declined to comment on the Nokia rumors.

nokia touchscreen concept 223x263 customNokia are tipped to begin using Synaptics touchscreen technology in their upcoming cellphones, with the first models using the presumably capacitive panels to launch in Q3 2009.  According to sources at Taiwan IC designers, Nokia is also considering introducing multitouch functionality to their handsets, in a move that could bring them into more direct competition with Apple and Palm.

Remember those photos purporting to show Nokia’s 5900 XpressMusic phone?  At the time we weren’t sure whether they were a legitimate leak or a Chinese faux-phone; now Kunal over at Tech Ticker has been training his eagle-eye over the photos, and flagging up some obvious issues.  The biggest is shown here: the memory card slot appears to be labeled “TFLASH”, presumably for Transflash.
