You can’t doubt AMD’s commitment to marketing speech: the company is describing their new ATI Radeon HD 5970 as the “fastest graphics card in the world”, and from glancing at the specifications it certainly looks potent.  The Radeon HD 5970 – which we saw leaked in recent weeks – packs DirectX 11 support, dual Cypress graphics processors for up to 5 TeraFLOPS of power, and the potential for twice that if you hook up twin HD 5970 cards using CrossFireX.  A single card can, thanks to Eyefinity, create a 7,680 x 1,600 workspace across three displays.

Remember all the furore back in August, when Microsoft announced they’d locked up Netflix movie streaming for the Xbox 360 and basically told us it was an “exclusive” partnership?  Well, that exclusivity seems to have been short-lived; Sony have announced that from November Netflix subscribers will be able to stream content on their PS3.

iomega storcenter ix2 200 nasIt’s been a long time since we reviewed Iomega’s original StorCenter ix2 NAS, and the company have finally got around to updating the dual-drive consumer/small-office backup and media-sharing system.  The Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 keeps the compact footprint of its predecessor but boosts capacity – 1TB, 2TB and 4TB models are on offer – upgrade potential and green credentials.

Unlike the ix2, the ix2-200 has twin user-accessible drive bays, and they’re filled with low-power drives that are automatically spun-down when not in use.  The StorCenter also has DLNA media streaming, RAID 1 drive spanning for improved data security, three USB ports for plugging in external drives or webcams, and optional Bluetooth for wirelessly transferring files from mobile devices.

It comes as no great surprise, given our unboxing video and hands-on with the new PMP is already live, but Microsoft have officially announced the Zune HD.  As well as reconfirming the specs we’ve already heard – NVIDIA Tegra processor, 720p HD playback, OLED multitouch touchscreen and either 16GB or 32GB of storage – Microsoft have also revealed that yes, the Zune HD will play 3D games such as Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition and Audiosurf Tilt together with getting Twitter and Facebook clients later in 2009.

Whether or not you’ve had an Xbox 360 or not, doesn’t really matter when it comes to hearing about the dreaded Red Ring of Death (RRoD) situation, and for many people, it looks like it may be the bane of their life. At least when it comes to gaming. Game Informer’s printed magazine came out with a new report, after surveying 5,000 people, that shows a staggering 54.2% failure rate. Microsoft have begun to push out the Xbox LIVE update for their Xbox 360 console, and along with the games on demand, new avatar customization and UI improvements comes confirmation that the company has signed an exclusive deal with Netflix for instant streaming to a console.  The partnership means that the Xbox 360 will be the only console on which Netflix streaming is possible, effectively cutting the PlayStation 3 and Wii out of the loop.

With Toshiba slipping out of their mourning clothes and readying a Blu-ray player, it seemed as good a time as any to check whether their erstwhile HD-DVD partner Microsoft had reconsidered their “no Blu-ray for Xbox 360!” attitude.  Unfortunately, when TeamXBox asked them if such a peripheral might be in the works, the response was a definite no; according to Microsoft, instant downloads and streaming content are far preferable to a physical disc.
