According to the latest “open secret” in Japan, Sony are working on a Walkman and a satnav PND that would each use Google’s Android OS.  Expected to hit the market in 2010, full details about each device are unknown, beyond that Sony seem to be hoping to use the open-source platform for a range of future products.

Is the Sony mylo 2 WiFi communicator due for a replacement or, more simply, the axe?  They’re two obvious possibilities, as Sony scythe a third of the price from the mobile messenger, down from $299.99 to $199.99 at the company’s official store.

Landline phones have taken a pounding from cellphones these past few years; people expect their handsets to come packed with features, and beyond DECT digital cordless and a built-in answerphone the humble landline couldn’t really compete.  Now it’s either aim budget or add tech to justify your price-tag: VTech want $99.95 for their IS6110 cordless phone, and to make it worth your while they’ve thrown in instant messaging, a color screen and a QWERTY keyboard.  SlashGear has been doing more than the usual amount of online chatting to see whether it’s enough.

Digitalcube’s i-station UDIC may look like a mini-convertible UMPC, but in actual fact it’s an electronic dictionary.  Still, that doesn’t really do the handheld device justice: it’s a dictionary with 50 languages, as well as text-to-speech, “native speakers” pronunciation guides and the i-TRANS translating service.  Available in two versions, both have hard-drives: one 30GB, the other 60GB.  AVING have been playing with the i-station recently and have made a video of the device in action; check it out after the cut.

Sony has finally created a site where they’ll be releasing widgets for the Mylo personal communicator. They started with 5 on the site for now, and they’ll be adding more, but the exciting part is that if you are feeling generous you can create your own and post them on the site too.

We knew it was coming, but Sony’s new mylo 2 is actually more impressive than we dared expect.  While like the original communicator device it still lacks a cellphone radio, leaving you at the mercy of its WiFi b/g connection, the rest of the spec sheet is positively glowing.  The display is now a 4.5-inch 800 x 450 touchscreen, it has 1GB of internal memory and a 1.3-megapixel camera.

Will it be a Mylo 2? Or are they just going to sneak in the new features of WiFi and a Camera? There isn’t much info, but other than the camera revealed from the diagrams and the 802.11g WiFi from the wireless testing, there doesn’t appear to be much else different from the original.

Google have released an update to their Maps for Mobile application, which brings Assisted-GPS to handsets which lack hardware GPS receivers.  Called “My Location”, it triangulates a user’s position via proximity to cell towers, plotting estimated position on a map downloaded via the phone’s data connection.

Lets start by making a list of things you wouldn’t want in any vehicle for the military, we’ll start with packing materials, including foam, then lets go to wood, most specifically Balsa, which is quite possibly the weakest wood there is, right, that’s a good start no? Wrong. Guess what the new Humvees have in them?

balsa humvee

Fiberglass, Balsa wood, foam, and carbon, all of which, put in the right places, causes the original Humvee to shed about 900 pounds of excess weight. That doesn’t mean that the new Humvees are 900 pounds lighter, no all that weight was added back on in armor and mine blast protection.

Great Sony Mylo review

By Chris Davies on Friday, Oct 27th 2006 No Comments

This is possibly the best review of the Sony Mylo I’ve seen so far – incredibly detailed and covering all aspects of the IM-centric handheld’s functionality.  If you’re thinking of buying one then you really need to read this!  Written by someone who admits to be outside of the target demographic, the review is all the better for it; $350 is a lot of money that will never be subsidised by a carrier since it relies on WiFi rather than in-built cellular.
