Hawking, Musk, Wozniak, Chomsky warn of dawn of AI weaponry

IJCAI 2015 conference starts with open letter on the dawn of the era of autonomous weapons. This letter contains word that the machine war is not decades away, but years away. Too close to go without a hard and fast decision to outlaw autonomous weapons, to ban them worldwide, before they cause all-out chaos. The letter is short, concise, and extremely easy to understand: artificial intelligence can make the battlefield safer, it says, or AI can make the entire world a very terrible place to live.

Elon Musk explains first SpaceX failure in 7 years

Elon Musk explains first SpaceX failure in 7 years

Today SpaceX CEO and founder Elon Musk spoke about the Falcon 9 CRS-7 launch failure that occurred earlier this year. This event occurred on June 28th of 2015 en-route to the International Space Station. At liftoff this flight was nominal, with no signs of possible malfunction apparent. Shortly before first stage shutdown, the flight failed. Today Musk addressed the issues that they believe may have been the cause of this failed mission. There is still no one 100% certain found cause for this mishap.

SpaceX still bemused over CRS-7 explosion says Musk

SpaceX is struggling to figure out what exactly happened to the CRS-7 rocket last week, after the planned resupply mission to the ISS exploded after takeoff. "The data does seem to be quite difficult to interpret," SpaceX founder Elon Musk conceded, speaking at the ISS R&D Conference in Boston today. "Whatever happened is not a simple straightforward thing." Nobody was injured in the explosion, but SpaceX's resupply missions to the International Space Station are on hold until the incident is understood.

Musk: Tesla isn’t losing engineers to Apple (it’s the opposite!)

Earlier this year, rumors surfaced Apple was working on some sort of automotive project. Some believed it was an autonomous car; others felt it was more CarPlay related than anything else. While those rumors have (mostly) subsided, the idea is still there. Part of the rumor mill involved Tesla losing bunches of engineers to Apple, conjuring tales of a troubled Tesla. Speaking after Tesla’s earnings report yesterday, CEO Elon Musk said his company hasn’t lost many employees to Apple at all. In fact, they’re the ones taking Apple employees away from Cupertino.

Elon Musk: Tesla home batteries “basically sold out” through mid-2016

After speculation of such, Tesla recently introduced home batteries as part of its Tesla Energy division. These Powerwall (residential) and Powerpack (industrial) batteries, as they're called, are Tesla's way of ushering in a new future of sustainable energy, and they provide an enticing opportunity for those who may have otherwise been hesitating about switching to solar energy. During the Tesla earnings call today, company CEO Elon Musk touched on the topic of batteries, saying that the company has “basically sold out” the product all the way through the middle of next year.

Tesla website, Elon Musk’s Twitter defaced by hackers

Even the smartest, most innovative companies fall victim to hackers once in a while, as evidenced by the few hours of difficulty Tesla Motors experienced on their website and Twitter account. Starting sometime between 4:00 and 5:00pm ET on Saturday, hackers took control of the company's official home page, Twitter account, and even founder Elon Musk's Twitter account for a brief time. The profile name on the social networking site's page was changed to #RIPPRGANG during the time control was lost, with tweets promising a free car to anyone who called a certain phone number.

Elon Musk insists SpaceX rocket landing will work (eventually)

While last week's news of the Falcon 9 rocket's oh-so-close-but-not-quite landing attempt was somewhat disappointing to SpaceX fans and observers, Elon Musk isn't giving up! The SpaceX founder commented in a pair of tweets on Saturday that they had determined the rocket's crash was caused by a slower than expected throttle valve response. The latest event is part of a continued attempt by SpaceX to land a rocket on a floating platform — as opposed to crashing into the sea — in order to reuse it in future launches.

Musk: Tesla ‘misled’ about consumer interest in China

Speculation often leads to more of the same, unless you act upon those speculations. It’s a lesson Elon Musk and Tesla learned the hard way, it seems. In China, Tesla has found itself withering on the vine with a slower-than-expected adoption rate among customers. Previously, Musk said misinformation was to blame for Tesla’s slow rollout in China; that Chinese consumers didn’t quite grasp what his all-electric vehicles were about. It seems analysts may have taken him for a ride, though.

Elon Musk says we’ll “take autonomous cars for granted” very soon

Speaking onstage at GTC 2015 this afternoon, CEO Elon Musk made clear the future of autonomous cars. Answering NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang call to speak about the future of cars that avoid crashing on their own, Musk suggested that "we’ll take autonomous cars for granted in a very short period of time." It comes down to safety, of course - and government regulation. "When it comes to public safety, there’s an argument for being quite cautious before there’s a change," said Musk.

“We don’t have to worry about autonomous cars,” so says Elon Musk

This morning at GTC 2015, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk spoke onstage with NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang about car autonomy. Huang began with the "juicy stuff," as he called it. "You were quoted as saying artificial intelligence is more dangerous than nuclear weapons," suggested Huang to Musk, "...like a demon. How do you consolidate and rationalize that with deep learning’s potential?" Musk replied that autonomous cars weren't really in the scope of what he was speaking about - not with his warning about artificial intelligence, anyway.

Elon Musk is Easily the Most Fascinating Person in Tech

Elon Musk is Easily the Most Fascinating Person in Tech

I’m often asked who I think could be the biggest game-changer in the world of technology in the next decade. Often, people share their opinions on the matter, saying that it’ll be Apple or Google or even Microsoft. They argue that companies – not individuals – will ultimately be the change agents going forward. While I can certainly agree that major companies will likely play a major role in industry growth, I see things a much different way. I still believe that individuals can change the world in dramatic fashion, and the person who has the highest likelihood of doing that right now is Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk.
