By now we know that the Verizon Droid not only looks good, but has plenty of technical promise too, and BGR have followed up their preliminary hands-on with a more comprehensive preview of the Android smartphone.  The Motorola Droid gets praised for its “sharp, vibrant, bright and really, really responsive” 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen, while the keyboard may lack travel and feature closely-packed buttons but it’s good enough for “efficient” typing and is better than the T-Mobile G1.  Meanwhile the charging dock/multimedia station (which you can see in a video demo after the cut) automatically turns the Droid into a weather station.

Verizon have launched an offensive against the iPhone, with a new campaign called DroidDoes.com for their upcoming Motorola Droid Android smartphone.  The handset, previously known by its codenames of Tao and Sholes, is being promoted as offering everything the iPhone eschews: an open development platform, the ability to run background processes, a flexible, open App Store and replaceable batteries, among other things.  Verizon have also set up a countdown timer which suggests that the Motorola Droid will arrive on October 30th 2009.

Anyone who follows Google knows that he company has an odd sense of humor. Look no further than the changing logos to celebrate different events and holidays often of appeal to bankers and state employees. It is hard to miss the fact that the Android developers at Google have a fetish with sweets when it comes to naming their new OS versions.

If there’s one thing we like, it’s leaky phone companies and their prematurely-exposed wares.  The Boy Genius Report seem to have had their fair share of Motorola Sholes images lately, and there’s another three new images – including the crisp shot you see here – to tempt us.  According to the phone’s “About” screen, the handset will have official name Motorola Droid.

After yesterday’s extreme Motorola Tao close-ups, now comes a slightly more useful image of the phone that confirms the form-factor we’ve seen leaked previously.  While there are no shots of the keyboard extended, this new picture does at least show the touch-sensitive buttons and metal screen bezel.

You probably can’t tell from this photo, but you’re supposedly looking at a pre-release Motorola Tao – aka the Motorola Sholes – that’s fallen into the hands of someone over at HowardForums.  They’ve been posting various shots, though nothing that shows the full hardware at present, but certainly enough to keep us interested.

Another week has come and gone leaving us with memories and a hoard of cool stories to throw your way for weekend reading in case you missed them over the week. An Asus 900HA netbook was hacked into a touchscreen slate on Monday and we really liked it. DIY gear is so cool, especially when it turns out this good. Monday also brought some details on the Blackberry Storm 2 piezo touchscreen tech. We really hope its better than the original Storm.

September is a pretty huge month this year, from Apple to Microsoft, and it looks like Motorola is happy to get on the announcement train. Unfortunately for us, we don’t have much to go on, with the exception of a little Android making an appearance on the invitation. So, we’re thinking it has something to do with the Motorola Sholes and the Morrison.

Nothing like a leaked carrier roadmap to whet the upgrade appetite, and going by the Boy Genius Reports’ slice of Verizon’s not-too-distant future there’ll be plenty of CDMA handsets on offer to those bored with their current phone.  As well as a fair sized dollop of BlackBerry detail, there’s also a splash of Android and some feature-phones to be had too.

Android phones are coming out all over the place, ranging from the basic Android device, all the way up to HTC’s Sense UI, which made us all take a second look at what Android was capable of. And we’re happy to see the open source Operating System (OS) getting some of the lime-light, especially so quickly. And while HTC has beem the main proponent to Android’s availability on the market, other manufacturers are quickly clamoring to get their piece of the pie. Motorola has two handsets reportedly coming out, the Verizon-bound Sholes (or Shules, whichever you think doesn’t sound ridiculous when you say it aloud), and the T-Mobile Morrison, which is a lower-end device. And Samsung had already inroduced the i7500 (or Galaxy), but it looks like they’re not finished yet. Here, we finally introduce the Samsung Instinct Q.
