There’s a growing call to deliver desktop experiences on mobile devices, and in general that’s a good thing. I don’t want to be limited to cut-down, plain-text “mobile” versions of websites when I have a large smartphone display and speedy 3G connection that could readily handle the full version, and the push for full-HTML browsers (and things like Flash support) has already trickled down from a must-have on smartphones to a common feature-phone element. What’s lagging behind, it seems, is an understanding of how mobile device use differs from desktop use, and nowhere is that more evident than in social networking integration. Several devices promise to bring your online social life to the screen that’s always with you, but the experience is patchy at best.

Shipments of the Motorola MILESTONE began in Germany a few weeks ago, so it's a little surprising that we've waited this long for an unboxing video.  jkkmobile picked up one of the Android 2.0 handsets - known as the Motorola DROID in the US - and promptly opened it up on video. As Motorola have found over the past couple of years, it’s taking an increasing amount to get geeks and gadget lovers to stand up and pay attention to a new cellphone. Right now, one sure-fire way of doing that is by launching an Android device, and so that’s what the ailing mobile giant has done in the shape of the Motorola CLIQ (aka the DEXT outside of the US). Not only does the CLIQ promise to make a splash among Android handsets, it also marks the debut of Motorola’s attempt to corral social networking into a mobile device. In our review we’ll not only be looking at the CLIQ hardware, as Motorola’s first-generation Android smartphone, but at MOTOBLUR and its potential beyond the CLIQ. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

After spending most of Friday curled in a ball twitching and drooling after losing power and Internet access for almost 12 hours, I am glad to be back online and in the 21st century again. Just in time to hunker down and dose myself with a nice helping of week in review for your perusal. Chris reviewed the GSM Palm Pre and found the camera wasn't as good as some of its peers but found plenty to like in the end. The webOS operating system stands apart from rival OS'. Buffalo announced the HD-HU3 USB 3.0 drive and controller that will be shipping in Japan this month. The drive isn’t even that expensive; I hope it comes to America too.

motorola limo phoneWe doubt we’re the only people who forgot that Motorola had thrown their oar in with the LiMo Foundation, but happily we’ll unlikely to need that knowledge again since the company is seemingly dropping its support for the open-source mobile platform.  Motorola VP Christy Wyatt has vacated her seat on the LiMo Foundation board, while the company itself has downgraded its membership from “founding member” to “associate member”.

“At this time it feels that the Android platform gives it a richer, more consistent foundation with strong support for the ecosystem and developer community” Motorola statement

Samsung only made the Android-based Moment official a few hours ago, but we’ve already been playing with it today.  Sprint’s first Android device certainly makes a good first impression, with an eye-catching, color-popping AMOLED touchscreen that’s certainly on a par with its rivals for capacitive touch-sensitivity, though we wish Samsung could’ve put the Moment on a diet before it launched as it’s not the smallest of handsets.

We thought Microsoft fell short of the mark with Windows Mobile 6.5 but we still managed to get excited about the HTC HD2; it seems Motorola feel very differently.  According to Christy Wyatt, Motorola's VP for software platforms and ecosystem, the company is holding off from producing any Windows Mobile 6.5 devices, and instead waiting until Windows Mobile 7 arrives sometime in 2010.

Motorola have confirmed that their first Android smartphone, the Motorola DEXT, will arrive in the UK come Wednesday October 7th.  Stealing a leap on its US cousin, the Motorola CLIQ, the DEXT will be available exclusively to carrier Orange, and be priced at free to anybody willing to sign two years of their life away to a £34.26 ($55) per month contract.

Back when people were desperate to get their hands on the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, a pre-order event seemed a reasonable way to stoke the hype.  Now that we’re a few models down the line, T-Mobile USA’s pre-announcement for a pre-order of the Motorola CLIQ smacks vaguely of desperation.  As of October 19th, existing customers of the carrier will be able to order a CLIQ for $199.99 with a new two-year agreement, though they won’t actually get their new phone until November 2nd when it goes on sale generally.

We’re not cellphone manufacturers, but we can’t imagine there’s much more disheartening to hear reviewers suggest your latest handset “isn’t ready for primetime”.  Unfortunately for Motorola, that’s just the conclusion the Boy Genius Report have come to in their CLIQ preview, with the handset’s power-gobbling ways being the prime suspect for their dissatisfaction.
