Dear Canada, you’ve been very patient but your MiFi wait is over. Having announced back in October that the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2372 “intelligent mobile hotspot” was coming to Bell Mobility in November 2009, the carrier has waited until the very end of the month to put the 3G-sharing battery powered router on sale. However, on sale it is, and as of today Canadians looking to share a single 3G HSDPA/HSUPA connection between up to five WiFi devices can do so for $99.95 with a new, three year agreement.

A rebadge of the UMID mbook M1, the Spiga will be reaching European shelves this month complete with its Intel Atom CPU, 8GB of flash storage, 4.8-inch touchscreen and integrated 3G HSPA. Unfortunately they’ve also given it a stonking price tag: €500 ($748).

It's hard to miss the fact that this Friday is Black Friday. The day many people rush out to stores when they would normally still be asleep to get deals on items of all sorts for Christmas gifts. Many of the best deals are on technology items like notebooks, HDTVs, and Blu-ray players. Verizon Wireless has announced a killer deal on a netbook with mobile broadband coverage.
HTC HD2: What WinMo Can Do In the Right Hands (First Take)

Last week, the buzz was clearly on the DROID (see my first take here) but there was another device that was also getting a lot of attention, albeit somewhat more restrained as few folks had one to work with. A few weeks ago, I wrote a column that emphasized people shouldn’t dismiss Windows Mobile. Over the last week I’ve been using the phone with the quiet buzz that proves that assertion. Sadly, it’s the best Windows Mobile phone that you can’t buy in the US yet. What device am I talking about? None other than the HTC HD2.
The HD2 is marked by two features not usually found on most Windows Mobile phones. The first is a capacitive touch screen. This is the first Windows Mobile device that has no stylus and is totally designed for input by touch alone. The second is a 1GHz Snapdragon processor that makes Windows Mobile and especially the HTC Sense UI fly. Finally, add in a gorgeous 4.3″ screen and you realize this is not your father’s Windows Mobile device.

By Chris Davies on Friday, Nov 6th 2009 22 CommentsTwelve months ago HTC shook up the Windows Mobile world with the launch of the Touch HD, a smartphone that offered a vast touchscreen, lashings of connectivity and the latest version of their UI tweaking, TouchFLO 3D, to produce what was hitherto thought impossible: an alluring Windows Phone. Now, the company have attempted just such a revolution with Windows Mobile 6.5 in the shape of the HTC HD2. They’ve upped their game with a speedy Snapdragon processor, even vaster display and a fresh UI that’s been educated by their recent work on Android. Can the HTC HD2 again do the unthinkable, and give us a reason to love Windows Mobile?
Enough Already with the Subsidized Netbooks!
By Joanna Stern on Tuesday, Nov 3rd 2009 No CommentsWith the holidays fast approaching cell phone carriers are stocking up on inventory and amongst the new Motorola DROIDs, HTC Heroes, and Palm Pixies are a slightly larger, yet unfamiliar crop of devices – netbooks. AT&T is all giddy about its exclusive availability of the Nokia Booklet 3G and Sprint announced just yesterday that it will be selling the Dell Inspiron Mini 10V. Verizon already has three netbooks in its arsenal, including HP’s new powerful Mini 311. Clearly, lining up the selection isn’t a problem, but what the carriers haven’t figured out yet is that selling netbooks requires a totally different approach than selling phones. The deals and the subsidized model, in my mind, make as much sense for netbooks as building and then plowing a virtual Farmville farm!

The Novatel MiFi 2372 is just one of Canadian carrier Bell Mobility’s new HSPA+ devices, taking advantage of the new high-speed network set to go live in November.
NEC Aterm WM3300R for MiFi-style mobile WiMAX sharing

Basically a MiFi but for WiMAX rather than 3G connections, the WM3300R offers up to 40Mbps downlinks and up to 10Mbps uplinks, together with a removable 1,880mAh Li-Ion battery.
Can a Droid take on the Death Star?

Since it’s introduction, the AT&T logo has reminded many users of the Death Star. Sure, that’s not what it’s supposed to look like but no matter how many times they tweak it, I just see the Death Star. So it was amusing to me when over the weekend the first leaks (or release depending on your point of view) came about Verizon’s latest campaign about a phone called the Droid that’s poised to take on the iPhone.
MiFi 2200 firmware update adds Sprint CDMA roaming
By Chris Davies on Wednesday, Oct 21st 2009 1 CommentMiFi 2200 owners in the US have a treat in store, with a new firmware update available seemingly for both the Verizon and Sprint versions of the intelligent mobile hotspot. The new firmware addresses WiFi compatibility issues with the Nintendo DS and BlackBerry Curve, as well as – for the Sprint MiFi 2200 at least – enabling “international roaming”. However don’t get too excited; that doesn’t mean Novatel have suddenly unlocked GSM support in the hitherto CDMA-only hotspot.
