After spending most of Friday curled in a ball twitching and drooling after losing power and Internet access for almost 12 hours, I am glad to be back online and in the 21st century again. Just in time to hunker down and dose myself with a nice helping of week in review for your perusal. Chris reviewed the GSM Palm Pre and found the camera wasn't as good as some of its peers but found plenty to like in the end. The webOS operating system stands apart from rival OS'. Buffalo announced the HD-HU3 USB 3.0 drive and controller that will be shipping in Japan this month. The drive isn’t even that expensive; I hope it comes to America too.

microsoft pink turtle leak 1After mediocre feedback to the leaked Microsoft Pink handsets, Turtle and Pure, now comes word from inside the project itself that the whole house of cards may be close to tumbling.  An ex-team member has been talking to Apple Insider about the Pink “skunkworks” project and its mismanagement, including attempting to develop too many SKUs simultaneously, potentially misleading hardware and carrier partners, and in the process pulling the rug out from the already-ailing Windows Mobile.  In fact, he reckons the Pink project is “near death and probably will be canceled”.

Crystal ball, secret tunnel or loose-lipped mole; we don’t know how Gizmodo are doing it, but hot on the heels of the Microsoft Courier dual-touchscreen tablet leak comes shots of Microsoft’s two upcoming Pink cellphones.  The Microsoft Turtle (the squarish model) and Microsoft Pure (the more traditional handset) are both manufactured by Sharp and will be co-branded, and like the Sidekick – which Sharp also manufactured for Danger – will be targeted at a messaging-friendly youth market.

The Microsoft “Project Pink” smartphone and personal tablet rumors have had a reboot this week, with both 9to5Mac and ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley each commenting on what snippets of insider news they’ve heard.  According to the normally Mac-centric site, Microsoft will be showing off two versions of their Pink self-branded smartphone, codenamed “Turtle” and “Pure”, with the former having a squared-circle shape and the latter being a more traditional candybar format.  Each will have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and be manufactured by Sharp.

Sony’s VAIO P was never the netbook many people expected it to be – its unusual screen aspect, stand-out form-factor and high sticker price meant it never quite competed with the regular Atom N270 netbook crowd – so the company is back with a far more mainstream alternative.  The Sony VAIO W is an “internet book” with a 10.1-inch screen and Intel’s typical N270 1.6GHz processor.

Update: It’s official for the US; more details after the cut

The Zune HD is actually a “digital entertainment handheld” that will allow Microsoft to take on Apple, Sony, Nintendo and Google, claim the latest leaks.  In fact, according to TeamXbox.com, rumors regarding the Zune HD actually started filtering in all the way back in August 2008; their sources tell them that the Microsoft device – codenamed “xYz”, to suggest the bridge between Xbox and Zune – will be a converged device but not a phone, and have a large WVGA touchscreen display together with “hardware features not found on any handheld on the market”.
