By Vincent Nguyen on Friday, Oct 30th 2009 1 Comment

There’s no doubting that multitouch is a key buzzword of today, and with the arrival of Windows 7 PCs gain at least software support for two-fingered control. Lenovo have responded by updating their well-esteemed ThinkPad X200 Tablet with Windows 7 and a new, multitouch-friendly display, the former as standard and the latter a paid option. Has the technology come of age, or is it a case of hype overtaking substance? Check out the SlashGear review after the cut.

Lenovo isn’t the only manufacturer with multitouch on their mind; Fujitsu have just announced an update to their LifeBook T5010 that adds two-finger touch sensitivity to the convertible notebook.  The LifeBook T5010’s 13.3-inch display will now support pinch-zoom, rotate and other two-finger gestures in Windows 7, as well as more traditional pen-input using an active digitizer.

Lenovo Canada are offering ThinkPad X200 Tablet PC buyers a newly-expanded range of processor options, more than twice as many as US buyers can configure their touchscreen ultraportables with.  The Canadian X200 gets not only a choice of the original SU9300 1.20GHz and SL9400 1.86GHz CPUs as the US model, but up to a 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo SL9600 low-voltage chip.

Lenovo has announced that eight of its ThinkPad notebooks have passed military-standards for ruggedization, making them not only resistant to pressure, humidity, temperature, dust and vibration, but to a greater extent than some “mil-spec” rivals.  The ThinkPad X200, X301, X200s, X200 Tablet, T400, T500, R400 and SL300 all passed durability tests despite not being specifically marketed as ruggedized models.

Lenovo’s X200s, announced at the same time as the X200t Tablet PC, aims to take the ethos of the company’s standard X200 ultraportable and instill some stamina into it.  By switching out the standard CPU for a low-voltage processor, using an LED backlight for the display and strapping in a 9-cell battery, Lenovo claim 13.2hrs continuous runtime; Laptop Mag have have it on the bench, and under normal conditions it coasted to 10hrs 43 minutes.

Lenovo’s X200t has only been official since Thursday last week, but the reviews are already beginning to wade in.  Laptop Mag have put the $2,300 convertible notebook through its paces, and like just about every ThinkPad review in existence, the keyboard and general durability are both praised.  Meanwhile, over at GottaBeMobile, they’ve lined up the X200t against a key rival: HP’s 2730p Tablet PC, announced back in August.

hp touchsmart iq800After a week or two on the down-low, netbooks have been back among the headlines with Sony grudgingly admitting that it will probably make one while MSI discussed plans for their second-generation range.  Not bad for something an AMD VP described as only good for “around the house”.  Elsewhere, it’s been 3G and netbooks getting married: Vodafone revealed their UK deal with Dell, and T-Mobile their Acer deal in Germany.  Speaking of Acer, we unboxed their Aspire One and will have the full review on Monday.

Lenovo has finally delivered on the ThinkPad X200t Tablet PC, after months of speculation and rumor.  It’s also brought along a friend, in the shape of the X200s, a lightweight business version of the existing ThinkPad X200.  CPU options range from a 1.2GHz SU9300 Core 2 Duo up to a 1.86GHz SL9400, while up to 4GB of RAM can be specified together with a 128GB Samsung SSD.  Connectivity options include WWAN, WiMAX and UWB, together with GPS

Intel UrbanMax concept 1Intel have been holding their annual Developers’ Forum in San Francisco this week, and quite a few prototypes and commercial products have come out to play. Of the former, most exciting seems to be the UrbanMax Tablet PC concept; of the latter, Viliv’s S5 MID and S7 UMPC both promise to crank the netbook market up a gear or two.

That’s probably not what Acer want to hear; the company has snipped pricing off of their Aspire One netbook, presumably remembering (only a little late) that the ultraportables are meant to be cheap. Not far from the shelves, Fujitsu’s Amilo Mini and Dell’s Inspiron 910 continued to leak information, but still no official word from the tongue-tied companies themselves.
