The Viliv S10 may be a size increase for the Korean company, but at 10-inches the convertible touchscreen netbook is still very much an ultraportable.  Steve from MID Moves had a chance to grab some hands-on time with the S10, suggesting that the netbook is better put together than Gigabyte’s TouchNote; you can see his video after the cut.

Earlier on today we told you about Viliv’s Korean prices and specifications for their upcoming S7 convertible touchscreen UMPC; now we have word on the international versions.  Not only will these offer the same Intel Atom Z520 1.33GHz processor, but there’ll also be a “flagship” model with a 2.0GHz Atom processor (likely the Z550), a 32GB SSD, integrated 3G and a free upgrade to Windows 7.

Viliv have announced pricing and final configurations for their upcoming convertible touchscreen UMPC, the Viliv S7.  The 7-inch device has a full QWERTY keyboard, together with up to 9.5hrs of runtime from a single charge, and can be outfitted with optional WiBro in Korea.

After months of complaint from US would-be VAIO P buyers, Sony has apparently relented and added a new, faster processor option to their “don’t call it a netbook” ultraportable.  The VAIO P VGN-P698E gets Intel’s 1.60GHz Intel Atom processor, likely the Z530, together with a 128GB SSD and the usual integrated Verizon EVDO Rev.A and GPS.

As well as throwing WiMAX into select VAIO P models, Sony is also giving the Japanese version of their “don’t call it a netbook” a processor boost.  Intel’s Atom Z550 - at 2.0GHz the fastest of the Z-range – is now an option, and going from the preliminary benchmarks it’s clear that this new iteration is the best VAIO P to date.

Fujitsu are the first to outfit a model from their ultraportable range with the Intel Atom Z550 running at 2GHz.  The Fujitsu LOOX U – variously known as the LifeBook U820 and U2010 in different markets – can now be specified with the faster Atom chip; the existing 1.33GHz Z520 and 1.60GHz Z530 options remain.

Video of the Intel MID presentation held at IDF Beijing this week has been released, complete with prototypes of some of the devices to be powered by the latest – and future – Atom processors.  Intel’s press release [PDF link] from the event covers the new devices, which include a Menlow-based clamshell smartphone.

intel atom cpuIntel have officially announced two new Atom processors, the Z550 and the Z515.  First tipped back in March, the processors – which Intel expect to find homes in MIDs – run at 2GHz and 1.2GHz respectively, with Hyperthreading supported on the faster chip.  The company also demonstrated their upcoming Moorestown MID platform, which brings with it super-frugal power demands and the potential for smaller devices.

According to the latest model numbers dug up by Sony Insider, it looks as though Sony are preparing six new variants of the “it’s not a netbook” VAIO P ultraportable.  The codes – which jump from the 500-series of the current generation to a new 700-series – suggest the same array of color options, but also specification updates: VGN-P710T/B, VGN-P710T/R, VGN-P710T/G, VGN-P710T/W and the VGN-P730A/Q and VGN-P730T/Q.

intel atom cpuFresh Intel Atom rumor for your Monday morning, and whether you’re wishing for cheap netbooks or faster ones you may be in for disappointment.  According to multiple sources at netbook and MID manufacturers, Intel are considering increasing Atom N270 pricing in the face of component shortages, while they’re also said to have postponed the launch of their Atom Z550 and Z515 processors.
