MSI's rumored plans to corner the Pine Trail netbook market this month look to have been put on hold, with the company named as one of four firms - the others being ASUS, Acer and Lenovo - set to launch Atom N450 based models on January 11th.  The new timescale apparently complies with Intel's launch schedule, with the N450 set to officially debut on January 10th, ahead of the Atom N470 processor's arrival in March 2010.

Intel atom logoFurther hardware details regarding Intel’s imminent Pine Trail platform have emerged, suggesting that the next-gen Atom chips will be smaller, more efficient and cheaper for the company to produce than the existing processors.  Set to debut in Q1 2010, according to Fudzilla the Pine Trail-M mobile chips will deliver a roughly 20-percent reduction in power consumption, when compared with the current Atom CPUs (measured in Mobile Mark 05).

Fujitsu have always been partial to tiny computers – the LifeBook U8×0 series still rank as some of the most appealing UMPCs around – and their latest model certainly looks endearing at first glance.  The Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 has a more traditional clamshell form-factor than the mini-convertibles in the company’s back-catalog, but more than makes up with it with a 5.6-inch sunlight-readable WXGA multitouch display, 62GB SSD and optional integrated 3.5G WWAN.

Update: Pricing and more photos added after the cut

Intel have released the beta of their Atom Developer Program Software Development Kit (SDK), last discussed back in September, to allow Windows and Moblin developers to create (or port) applications and potentially monetize them with distribution on upcoming Atom-based netbooks. Software must be validated and approved by Intel, and paid-for apps are expected to be released in 2010.

Given how popular Android has tuned out to be among no-name tablet manufacturers, it’s almost a surprise to see a new Windows XP slate.  Still, the Shenzhen Seed Industrial Co. HT560 has a few tricks up its sleeve: behind the 5.6-inch WVGA 800 x 480 touchscreen lurks VIA’s 1GHz C7 processor rather than the Intel Atom we’ve come to expect, paired with 1GB of memory and between 8GB and 32GB of SSD storage.

If you’d told us a month or two ago that ASUS’ Eee PC 1201HA would be arriving at Best Buy priced at $329.99, you might have prompted a few oohs and aahs.  Unfortunately, with the company’s NVIDIA Ion and AMD Congo models (the 1201N and 1201T, respectively) on the scene, the standard Atom Z520/GMA950 version seems more than a little backward.

ASUS have pushed out another 12.1-inch ultrathin, and this time they’ve eschewed Intel in favor of some AMD goodness.  Unlike the 1201HA and 1201N, the ASUS Eee PC 1201T uses AMD’s 1.6GHz Congo MV40 processor, along with the RS780MN chipset and ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics; that adds up to 1080p Full HD performance, though it doesn’t appear from the spec sheets that ASUS have fitted an HDMI port to the 1201T.

It went unnoticed by most, but back in October Sagemcom announced it would be selling its first MID, the Sagemcom Spiga.  A rebadge of the UMID mbook M1, the Spiga will be reaching European shelves this month complete with its Intel Atom CPU, 8GB of flash storage, 4.8-inch touchscreen and integrated 3G HSPA.  Unfortunately they’ve also given it a stonking price tag: €500 ($748).

ViewSonic’s deluge of new products back in July failed to include a MID or UMPC style device, but it seems they were merely waiting for the holidays to arrive in order to roll out just such a model.  The ViewSonic N01 is a reasonably striking MID with a 1.1GHz Intel Atom Z510 processor, 1GB of RAM and a scant 10GB of onboard storage; it also has integrated 3G connectivity along with a TV tuner and Windows XP.

Somebody needs to rent a boat, sail to China and pick up a hold-full of unknown touchscreen tablets; it's getting more than a little frustrating seeing what's on offer over there, and having so little choice in the US and Europe.  Latest to tickle our collective fancy is the K.R.T. X9 from Shenzhen K.R.T. Technology, a 10-inch multitouch slate running Windows 7 on an Intel Atom N270 processor.  The X9 packs WCDMA, TD-SCDMA and CDMA2000 3G, pretty much covering all the bases, together with WiFi a/b/g.
