Hot on the heels of the leaked Motorola Sholes pictures comes this, another as-yet unknown Motorola smartphone that again is tipped to run Android.  Little is known about the unnamed handset, but it’s said to have a 3.8-inch touchscreen and an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash.

Update: Eagle-eyed Cellularmania have spotted that this looks like a Photoshopped Samsung Omnia II; the front has had the Motorola logo and DROID keys added, while the back (shown after the cut) is a dead ringer for the Samsung’s camera cluster.

HTC HD2 review

By Chris Davies on Friday, Nov 6th 2009 22 Comments

Twelve months ago HTC shook up the Windows Mobile world with the launch of the Touch HD, a smartphone that offered a vast touchscreen, lashings of connectivity and the latest version of their UI tweaking, TouchFLO 3D, to produce what was hitherto thought impossible: an alluring Windows Phone. Now, the company have attempted just such a revolution with Windows Mobile 6.5 in the shape of the HTC HD2. They’ve upped their game with a speedy Snapdragon processor, even vaster display and a fresh UI that’s been educated by their recent work on Android. Can the HTC HD2 again do the unthinkable, and give us a reason to love Windows Mobile?

It’s fair to say that the last time we saw excitement to this degree about a Windows Phone it centered on the HTC Touch HD, and so it seems only right that it’s the company’s successor to that handset, the HTC HD2, that is prompting such interest in 2009. Announced last month after copious rumors, what makes the HD2 special is its 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen, HTC Sense UI and 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. It’s taken a while, but the HTC HD2 has finally dropped onto the SlashGear test bench, so check out our first impressions and an unboxing video after the cut.

T-Mobile UK have announced that they’re preparing to offer the HTC Touch2 and HTC HD2, though it seems that someone in their web team hasn’t been keeping up with the rumor-mill.  Both Windows Phones are listed as coming in November, but the HD2 is illustrated with an image of the Touch HD and said to come with a 3.8-inch display and access to the Android Market.

It seems we could have been calling Sony Ericsson’s first Android smartphone by the wrong name, at least according to a Tweakers forum member.  That individual, who claims to have not only talked to Sony Ericsson staff about the device but to have played with a prototype, says that rather than the XPERIA X3, the handset will most likely be branded as the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.  They’ve also let slip some details about a possible launch window.

According to carrier O2, the HTC HD2 will be launching in the UK from the week beginning October 19th, putting the flagship Windows Phone potentially less then 10 days away from capacious pockets.  We're yet to hear anything official from O2 or HTC themselves - the latter only told reporters that the HD2 would drop in October when they launched the Windows Mobile 6.5 device earlier this week - but customer services for the carrier have apparently been telling callers about the October 19th date.

After weeks of rumor, HTC have confirmed the existence of their latest flagship Windows Phone, the HTC HD2 (aka the HTC Leo).  As expected, the HD2 runs Windows Mobile 6.5 on a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, with a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen and 5-megapixel autofocus camera; it’s also the first Windows Phone to support both multitouch and HTC Sense.  Perhaps best of all, HTC CEO Peter Chou has confirmed that HTC will be offering a US 3G version of the HD2 in Q1 2010.  SlashGear sat down with Chou earlier on today to get a preview of the HD2 and find out more about HTC’s focus moving forward.

A thoughtful person might look at the Verizon Imagio and decide that it’s almost HTC delivering the Touch HD (Review part 1 & part 2) that their US audience never officially had. A comparatively large touchscreen, slender casing and 5-megapixel camera certainly tally with what the Touch HD offered; still, it’s been almost a year since we reviewed the GSM phone, so does the Imagio deliver the goods with Windows Mobile 6.5? We probably shouldn't be too surprised, what with Windows Mobile 6.5 making its official debut tomorrow, but according to ai.rs' source HTC will be taking the wraps off of the HTC HD2 (aka HTC Leo) on Tuesday too.  The 4.3-inch Qualcomm Snapdragon smartphone won't actually be anywhere near shelves tomorrow, mind; we'll apparently have to wait until the end of October or the start of November for that to happen.

HTC’s HD2 (aka the HTC Leo) keeps showing up in various carriers‘ promo material, though since they only ever say “biggest WinMo phone yet!” it’s been hard to pin down exact specifications.  Happily, that’s all changed thanks to one talkative xda-developers board member; he’s managed to sneak out the full spec sheet – which you can read after the cut – together with a few new live photos of the smartphone itself.
