HTC HD2 review

Twelve months ago HTC shook up the Windows Mobile world with the launch of the Touch HD, a smartphone that offered a vast touchscreen, lashings of connectivity and the latest version of their UI tweaking, TouchFLO 3D, to produce what was hitherto thought impossible: an alluring Windows Phone. Now, the company have attempted just such a revolution with Windows Mobile 6.5 in the shape of the HTC HD2. They’ve upped their game with a speedy Snapdragon processor, even vaster display and a fresh UI that’s been educated by their recent work on Android. Can the HTC HD2 again do the unthinkable, and give us a reason to love Windows Mobile?

DIY Virtual Reality headset is bizarre genius [Video]

I think it’s fair to say that if you make one of these DIY virtual reality headsets, your kids will definitely be the coolest in the playground. The handiwork of Recombu’s Andrew Lim, the cardboard headset takes advantage of an accelerometer-packing HTC Magic, an old pair of lab goggles and some boyish enthusiasm to create a head-tracking view of the world.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 43 2009

Weeks are flying by and it’s time for another week in review. Monday we learned that a new hack was available from the iPhone Dev Team that adds MMS to first generation iPhones and tethering to 3.1.2 OS for the later iPhone models. We also found out that Microsoft is set to issue a new update for the Xbox 360 that will break unauthorized storage devices. That means that some gamers will be unable to access the saved game data after applying the new update.

Verizon Droid gets previewed; AT&T version spotted; Droid army predicted

By now we know that the Verizon Droid not only looks good, but has plenty of technical promise too, and BGR have followed up their preliminary hands-on with a more comprehensive preview of the Android smartphone. The Motorola Droid gets praised for its “sharp, vibrant, bright and really, really responsive” 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen, while the keyboard may lack travel and feature closely-packed buttons but it’s good enough for “efficient” typing and is better than the T-Mobile G1. Meanwhile the charging dock/multimedia station (which you can see in a video demo after the cut) automatically turns the Droid into a weather station.

Acer Liquid Snapdragon-based Android smartphone announced

acer liquid android snapdragon smartphone Acer have officially announced their first Android smartphone, the Acer Liquid A1, and it’s also the first handset running the Android platform to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor. The Liquid has a WVGA touchscreen, HSPA connectivity and a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, geo-tagging, ISO and a self-timer.

The speedy Qualcomm chipset also means the Liquid can support 3D graphics, and the phone will run Android 1.6.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 41 2009

After spending most of Friday curled in a ball twitching and drooling after losing power and Internet access for almost 12 hours, I am glad to be back online and in the 21st century again. Just in time to hunker down and dose myself with a nice helping of week in review for your perusal. Chris reviewed the GSM Palm Pre and found the camera wasn't as good as some of its peers but found plenty to like in the end. The webOS operating system stands apart from rival OS'. Buffalo announced the HD-HU3 USB 3.0 drive and controller that will be shipping in Japan this month. The drive isn’t even that expensive; I hope it comes to America too.

Sprint Samsung Intrepid Windows Phone sneaks in touchscreen

Sprint Samsung Intrepid You’d be forgiven for thinking that AT&T and Verizon had the lions share of the Windows Phone action today, but Sprint would hate for you to think they’re left out. They’ve launched the Samsung Intrepid, at first glance a straightforward candybar handset with a full QWERTY keyboard, but which in fact includes a touchscreen and thus runs Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional rather than Standard.

That’s an unusual form-factor, but other than the display – a 2.5-inch 320 x 240 resistive panel – it’s a reasonably straightforward Windows Phone. As well as EVDO Rev.A the Intrepid supports GSM for international use, together with WiFI and Bluetooth, a 3.2-megapixel camera and GPS.

HTC HD2 Windows Phone gets official: Hands-on Video

After weeks of rumor, HTC have confirmed the existence of their latest flagship Windows Phone, the HTC HD2 (aka the HTC Leo). As expected, the HD2 runs Windows Mobile 6.5 on a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, with a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen and 5-megapixel autofocus camera; it’s also the first Windows Phone to support both multitouch and HTC Sense. Perhaps best of all, HTC CEO Peter Chou has confirmed that HTC will be offering a US 3G version of the HD2 in Q1 2010. SlashGear sat down with Chou earlier on today to get a preview of the HD2 and find out more about HTC’s focus moving forward.

LG GW620 is latest Android competitor; LG WinMo to continue

LG have officially announced their first Android handset, the LG GW620, and with it a “two tier smartphone strategy” signifying the company’s intent to continue to offer Windows Mobile devices. The GW620 has both a 3-inch touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY hardware keyboard, and avoids the heavy customization of HTC Sense or Motorola MOTOBLUR.

Sprint adopt Qualcomm Brew; entry-level HTC incoming?

Sprint have obviously decided that it helps to have fingers in as many developer pies as possible, with the announcement that they will now be launching Qualcomm’s Brew mobile platform. No specific devices are mentioned by the carrier, only that they will run both native Brew apps together with “high-performance mobile Java” software.
