MID development slashed as manufacturer interest wanes?

Many have accused Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) as being gadgets in dire search of a purpose, and despite Intel’s push for the segment the talk out of Taipei is that the ultraportable touchscreen handhelds are having a difficult time finding traction among manufacturers. DigiTimes is reporting that several companies originally signed up to Intel’s Mobile Internet Device Innovation Alliance (MIDIA) have axed MID development, while those manufacturers who have actually shipped devices have only done so in numbers described as “very weak”.

ATI Radeon HD 5970 5 TeraFLOP graphics card debuts

You can’t doubt AMD’s commitment to marketing speech: the company is describing their new ATI Radeon HD 5970 as the “fastest graphics card in the world”, and from glancing at the specifications it certainly looks potent. The Radeon HD 5970 – which we saw leaked in recent weeks – packs DirectX 11 support, dual Cypress graphics processors for up to 5 TeraFLOPS of power, and the potential for twice that if you hook up twin HD 5970 cards using CrossFireX. A single card can, thanks to Eyefinity, create a 7,680 x 1,600 workspace across three displays.

HP ProBook 6445b and 6545b notebooks & Elite 7000 desktop break cover

HP have also updated their business notebooks and desktop range today, in the shape of the HP ProBook 6445b and ProBook 6545b laptops and the HP Elite 7000 Business Desktop PC. The two notebooks each offer a choice of AMD Turion II, Athlon II or Sempron processors, together with up to 8GB of RAM, up to 500GB HDD/128GB SSD, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 graphics. The ProBook 6445b has a 14-inch display running at 1,366 x 768 while the ProBook 6545b has a 15.6-inch display running at either 1,366 x 768 or 1,600 x 900.

LG GD510 “Pop”: style & solar charging, but short on specs

Sometimes a gadget comes along that is so pretty that, when you realise it has a spec-sheet more barren than the Sahara, you can’t help but tear at your chest and roar. LG’s GD510 “Pop” isn’t quite so bad as all that, but it’s a handsome 3-inch touchscreen phone – the most compact ever with such a screen-size, they say – with a brushed aluminum body that throws out most of the things we take for granted in today’s handsets. WiFi we can live without, but a handset lacking 3G? For shame!

Viliv S10 10hr touchscreen netbook stars in hands-on video

The Viliv S10 may be a size increase for the Korean company, but at 10-inches the convertible touchscreen netbook is still very much an ultraportable. Steve from MID Moves had a chance to grab some hands-on time with the S10, suggesting that the netbook is better put together than Gigabyte’s TouchNote; you can see his video after the cut.

SanDisk Extreme Pro CF cards deliver 90MB/s transfers

SanDisk have just outed a new range of Compact Flash memory cards aimed a pro-photographers, the SanDisk Extreme Pro series, promising capacities ranging from 16GB to 64GB and read/write speeds of 90MB/s. SlashGear’s old friend Chase Jarvis has been shooting the campaign, and you can see his preliminary rapid-fire footage after the cut.

Samsung Spinpoint M7 640GB 2.5-inch hard-drive debuts

Samsung have announced their latest 2.5-inch hard-drive, and while it may not be a fashionable SSD it does at least have capacity going for it. The Samsung Spinpoint M7 packs 640GB into its dual-platter design, with 5,400rpm spin speed.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 33 2009

The end of the week is here again and here we go with a rundown of some of the coolest stories we have seen this week. Monday marked the day the Asus Eee PC 1101HA went on sale in America. The rig is a netbook in name only; the beastie is expensive at about $430. The same day Gigabyte quietly unveiled the T1028X convertible touchscreen netbook. The device has a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and other than the screen, the rest of the machine is typical netbook fare.

Gigabyte Booktop M1022 netbook review

If there’s one segment in consumer electronics where it’s hard to stand out, it’s netbooks. The race to the bottom line, together with strict rules from component suppliers regarding maximum specifications, means that the hardware of most machines follows the same, tired pattern. To differentiate, some brands have gone for super-slimline designs, or extended battery life; Gigabyte, meanwhile, have taken a more unusual route. Their Booktop M1022 netbook comes complete with a desktop docking station; our friends over at Mobilx.hu were good enough to send us a review unit to try out.

HP slash Pavilion dv3t and dv2z prices

It’s not only the new dv6z Artist Edition and dv6t that HP are unveiling today: the company has also taken a knife to the price tags of their ultraportable Pavilion dv3t and Pavilion dv2z. The former, a 13.3-inch machine with Intel processors, went on sale back in April and now gets a $150 cut to $649.99. Meanwhile the dv2z with its 12.1-inch display and AMD Neo processor slides down a similar amount to $599.
