img 8486 thumbWe’ve been talking about the T1028M Touchnote for awhile now, but nothing gets us more excited than full, genuine unboxing and that’s precisely what we came across today. The Gigabyte T1028M Touchnote got its moment in the sun today with a full unboxing over at UMPCPortal. This portable seemed to pretty much live up to expectations, though there was a disappointment factor when it came to the battery.

Importers won’t be bringing the Gigabyte T1028 touchscreen convertible netbook to the US until the end of April, but Engadget Chinese have picked one up ahead of time.  Compared to the M912, Gigabyte’s previous-gen touchscreen netbook, there are improvements all across the board.

While seeing OS X running on various traditionally Linux or Windows netbooks is nothing new, there’s still a frisson of pleasure to be had from a new machine getting its unofficial Apple stripes.  When said-new-machine is the HP Compaq Mini 700, the Euro version of the HP Mini 1000 and a particularly desirable and impressive machine in its own right, that gets all the more interesting.

The Windows 7 testing continues, with Gigabyte’s M912 convertible touchscreen netbook the latest to have some playtime with Microsoft’s new pre-beta OS.  Actual test results are pretty sparse right now, but UMPC Fever have been recording start-up and shut-down times which give a good indication of how usable the OS might be on the tablet.  Booting into Windows 7 on the M912 takes roughly 1 minute 11 seconds, while shutdown is around 32 seconds.

An unnamed search engine has reported traffic from a product purporting to be Apple-made but with a screen-size larger than that of the iPhone but smaller than that of MacBooks.  The disclosure was made to John Markoff of the NYT, on the understanding that their identity be protected, and instantly the speculation began that Apple is testing its own netbook or tablet.

Netbooks running Apple’s OS X have been done before, so this software install hack takes it one stage further by putting Leopard on a touchscreen Gigabyte M912X.  Since Leopard has inking facilities built-in – including an on-screen keyboard and handwriting recognition courtesy of InkWell – it looks to be a very successful transplant.

nintendo dsiBiggest news this week has been in gaming, with Nintendo announcing the latest iteration of their DS handheld.  The DSi introduces new multimedia features – for instance a 3-megapixel camera – and an even thinner body, at the expense of battery life.  Don’t get too excited, though; the US won’t see the DSi until “well into” 2009.

In netbooks, ASUS slipped in a few new models at both the low and high-end of the market, with the Eee PC 900HA and 904HA offering bargain 160GB storage while the S101 corners the more-fashionable (and expensive) end.  That’s a niche the ASUS N10 already occupies; that netbook ran the review gauntlet this week, proving “technologically clever” but simply too expensive.  ASUS – and MSI, whose Wind U90 was panned too – must be looking enviably at Gigabyte’s M912M convertible touchscreen netbook, which was good enough to pull a credit card from the wallet of one reviewer.

Gigabyte’s M912X touchscreen convertible netbook certainly has the performance, the resolution and the upgrade potential, but it still wasn’t the perfect mini-tablet.  Battery life was the key complaint, suffering from the CCFL backlight.  Thankfully Gigabyte also have an LED-backlit model, the M912M, which drops pixels (the M912M is 1024 x 600 versus 1280 x 768 on the M912X) but brings with it frugality.  UMPC Portal have been marking the differences between the two versions, and the M912M certainly comes out ahead for most users.

Intel’s Classmate Tablet PC was a surprise announcement at IDF yesterday, and Laptop Mag have scored a little more time with the education-focused notebook.  While the hardware is certainly pre-production – both the handle and the touchpad you see here are temporary, with Intel still working out exactly how they will look – overall it looks too promising even to be simply left for the classroom.
