With Snow Leopard happily padding around hundreds of thousands of Macs around the world, it comes as little surprise to hear that Apple are already a few weeks into development of OS X 10.7.  Sign of the upcoming OS refresh has been spotted in the change log of the open source "launchd" framework: a new entry for Mac OS build number "11A47" has turned up, and going by Apple's general nomenclature for build codes, that points squarely at OS X 10.7.

Maemo – as on the Nokia N900 – is still more of a geek’s paradise than a consumer-ready platform, so we hope the development team responsible for it will be working hard over the next couple of years.  That’s because the Maemo marketing team have let slip that, as of 2012, Maemo will replace Symbian as the OS for Nokia’s entire Nseries range of handsets.

EFI-X’s OS X hack dongle always seemed too good to be true; according to a new report from Tom’s Hardware, it really was.  The adapter promised to take a computer built from standard PC components and allow Mac OS X to be installed on it, without the usual patching and tweaking required for a regular “Hackint0sh”.  However, as one EFI-X owner has discovered, it seems the company did little more than repackage Chameleon/Boot-132 bootloader code onto a DRM-encrypted USB stick.

Two upcoming ranges of devices from Nokia have been tipped, after listings for the Cseries and Xseries were discovered in Finland’s trademark database.  Although no official delineation of the ranges has been made, current thinking is leaning toward seeing the C-prefix as for mainstream, numbered devices, while the X-prefix might refer to Maemo 5 based devices.  There are also references to the Nokia Booklet and the “Ilo by Nokia”.

intel core i3 i5 i7 rebrandingIntel have announced that it will be rebranding its CPU range to supposedly simplify the lineup, focusing on the “Intel Core” prefix and transitioning the Centrino brand to cover the company’s WiFi and WiMAX products.  Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 will eventually replace Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad, distinguishing different feature sets; somewhat confusingly, some processors will slot into multiple i-prefix categories, depending on their capabilities.

For instance, the upcoming Lynnfield desktop processor will be an Intel Core chip, but have various models that slot into the i5 or i7 segments.  Broadly speaking, i3 is an entry-level chip, i5 is a mid-level chip and i7 is the flagship high-level processor.  It’s not all change, though, as the Celeron and Pentium brands limp on to cover “affordable entry-level” and “basic computing” respectively.

sprint logoOver the past year or so, it’s become almost customary to prefix mention of Sprint with the phrase “beleaguered carrier”.  The cash-consuming Nextel merge and WiMAX XOHM roll-out both took their toll on the company coffers, while users complained of lacking customer service.  Has Sprint managed to turn things around in the tail-end of 2008, however?  Recent research into telephone support found that Sprint was the fastest carrier to answer its phones: more than 91-percent of calls in 30 seconds or less, and 99-percent in two minutes or less.
