Many of the most popular netbooks that Asus and other companies make use SSDs rather than traditional hard drives. The SSD helps the little systems get more run time out of their battery packs and helps them perform better. If you are looking for more performance from a netbook that came with an SSD from the factory, Active Media has a new line of upgrade SSDs called the SaberTooth S4 series.

Acer’s Aspire Revo nettop has just received a welcome shot in the arm, courtesy of a dual-core Atom 330 processor and an extra gig of RAM.  The Aspire Revo R3610-U9012 kicks out its predecessor’s Atom 230 chip in favor of the quicker alternative, and pairs it with 2GB of RAM, Windows 7 and NVIDIA Ion graphics.  That should hopefully make the system a little better at coping with non-1080p video tasks, something the first model had issues with.

Only yesterday we were picking through specifications of the Canon EOS 7D, crossing our fingers that the new DSLR would drop sooner rather than later.  Now Canon have made their latest digital camera official, and as expected it’s an 18-megapixel monster complete with 8fps continuous shooting, the company’s latest APS-C CMOS sensor, and Full HD 1080p video capture at 24p, 25p or 30p.

Twitter is great, but we do prefer more mainstream routes for much-anticipated news like the release date of the Eee PC T91 touchscreen netbook.  Still, after the in-stock/not-in-stock flip-flopping of retailers, we’ll welcome anything concrete from ASUS themselves, even if it’s a two-sentence tweet telling us that the 8.9-inch netbook will arrive in the US on July 15th.

We’re used to our mobile devices flashing at us to let us know when there’s a missed call to be addressed, new SMS message or battery problem, but it’s less common for a notebook or netbook to blink for attention.  JustBlair decided to change that, adding a three-color LED to his Eee PC 901 that flashes whenever a new Twitter, email or IM message comes in.

More and more notebooks and netbooks are getting multitouch-capable touchpads, but if you’re chugging away with your existing machine and you want some straightforward multi-directional scrolling then you may need to take things into your own hands.  As you can see from the newly-acquired nubbin in the right palm-rest on this Eee PC 901, modder Dave Astolfo decided to extract the trackball from an Apple Mighty Mouse and implant it into his netbook.
