You may recall last month that the full specifications for the Asus Eee 1201N netbook turned up online. At the time, we heard the device would be hitting the market in December. That probably had netbook shoppers hoping to grab the 12.1-inch netbook for Christmas all hot and bothered.

If you’d told us a month or two ago that ASUS’ Eee PC 1201HA would be arriving at Best Buy priced at $329.99, you might have prompted a few oohs and aahs.  Unfortunately, with the company’s NVIDIA Ion and AMD Congo models (the 1201N and 1201T, respectively) on the scene, the standard Atom Z520/GMA950 version seems more than a little backward.

From one Congo ultraportable to another; MSI’s Wind12 U230 notebook only got official on Friday last week, but already the 12.1-incher has been spotted up for sale in a Taipei computer show.  NetbookNews grabbed some hands-on time with a 1.6GHz Congo MV40 ultrathin, in this particular case the 500GB model.

ASUS have pushed out another 12.1-inch ultrathin, and this time they’ve eschewed Intel in favor of some AMD goodness.  Unlike the 1201HA and 1201N, the ASUS Eee PC 1201T uses AMD’s 1.6GHz Congo MV40 processor, along with the RS780MN chipset and ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics; that adds up to 1080p Full HD performance, though it doesn’t appear from the spec sheets that ASUS have fitted an HDMI port to the 1201T.

Is something afoot with ASUS’ Eee Box EB1501 nettop?  The Ion-toting mini desktop PC has had listings at a few major e-tailers for a while now, but ASUS UK has apparently contacted some UK sites to say that the EB1501 is shipping as of today; meanwhile the NetbookReviews team spotted that Play.com had updated their pages with a “due for release on 27/11/09″.  All well and good, but a quick check of the site today shows the release date has disappeared and the nettop is showing up as “out of stock”.

Update: ASUS UK have been in touch to tell us that the EB1501 is indeed shipping today in the UK, and that they’ve been in contact with the retailers to ask them to update their listings.

Pixel Qi have announced that not only are they beginning mass production of their innovative display technology this coming December, but that they’ve a new product category in their sights.  The company has apparently begun to design a new HDTV with power consumption so low that it can be run from a solar panel, hand-crank or simply a small rechargeable battery.  Pixel Qi’s target price for the ultra-frugal set is just $100.

Nokia Booklet 3G review

By Chris Davies on Monday, Nov 23rd 2009 No Comments

While many scoffed at the idea of Nokia building a netbook, the idea does have its share of merits. After all, the Finnish company knows a few things about eking out runtimes from compact batteries, and with netbooks being perhaps the most likely of computing devices to be in search of mobile connectivity, stuffing them with the sort of wireless access your high-end Nokia boasts certainly makes sense. Throw in eye-catching design and you’re onto a winner, right? Unfortunately, we’ve found the Nokia Booklet 3G falls short in other areas; check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Like the look of Google Chrome OS but don’t want to wait until late next year to buy a system running the new, web-centric platform?  It’s only been a matter of hours since Google announced details of their new OS, but already there are a number of options for playing with the software.  gdgt have put out a full VMWare image of Chrome OS to play with on an existing system, or alternatively you can go the whole hog for a proper install.

Looking mighty familiar, but with a heritage that escapes our memory right now, Malata’s latest netbook is one of the increasingly popular convertible touchscreen models.  The Malata R108T packs a rotating 10-inch 1024 x 600 touchscreen – which we’re presuming is resistive – together with the usual dreary roster of 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 1GB of memory and 160GB hard-drive, but makes up for that by apparently being priced at around $435.
