Remember the talk of datacenters-in-containers last year and earlier? Google were even tipped to have patented the idea; now, though, a datacenter is simply too large to be fashionable, hence Dell’s datacenter-in-a-briefcase. To be fair, it’s not quite the briefcase you might take on your daily commute – think 40lb toolcase instead – but that’s still good enough to impress GigaOm.

What if you’re responsible not just for one broadband connection but a copper, fiber and wireless network that stretches across the US? That’s the responsibility of the AT&T Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) team, the group responsible for swooping in after natural disasters and significant network failures and bringing AT&T back online. SlashGear was invited to one of their quarterly disaster simulations recently took place at Houston, Texas to see what’s involved.

iVoice have been crowing happily [pdf link] about their latest patent, which describes a new way of pestering those on medication to pop their pills. Titled “Methodology for Talking Consumer Products with Voice Instructions via Wireless Technology”, it covers individual medication bottles that have a wireless chip, microprocessor and speaker built into them, and which are given unique instructions (dose, regularity, total number of pills) at the point of dispensing by a separate computer.
Its technically been renamed to the Modular Datacenter S20 (probably because its not black) but its still the same 20ft. shipping container with a datacenter inside that was previously mentioned. With this you can literally have up to 18 teraflops of performance and a max of 3 petabytes of storage delivered to your front door.
One of my best friends told me awhile back that he was looking into building himself a house out of a shipping container. Truthfully, I thought he was crazy at first but the idea seems to be wide spread and catching on more and more all the time. If the house was anything like the Push Button House, then I’d be game for buying it.
Well its not really in a box, its in a shipping container. Furthermore, its not all that new, I read about it way back when they hired the first couple of engineers specifically for this project.
It was rumored at the time that Google was buying up all the “Dark Fiber” out there and that they might be working towards creating their own Internet. That might still happen, but I doubt it, anyways, they finally patented the damn thing.
