Celio have finally released their software driver for BlackBerry owners wishing to use the company's REDFLY "Mobile Companion" device. Announced back in September, the new software means the BlackBerry's display can be replicated on the netbook-sized REDFLY C8N and C7 terminals, with users able to take advantage of a larger keyboard and a trackpad for navigation.

By Chris Davies on Tuesday, Oct 20th 2009 1 CommentBarnes and Noble have officially announced their ebook reader, the Barnes and Noble nook, complete with dual displays and free 3G and WiFi b/g wireless. The nook has a 6-inch E Ink Vizplex E Ink display up top and a 3.5-inch color touchscreen underneath, with the whole thing based on Android and measuring 7.7 x 4.9 x 0.5-inches while tipping the scales at 11.2oz. B&N have partnered with AT&T for the nook’s 3G access, and owners will be able to use the retailer’s in-store WiFi connections for free as well.
Sprint Samsung Intrepid Windows Phone sneaks in touchscreen

You’d be forgiven for thinking that AT&T and Verizon had the lions share of the Windows Phone action today, but Sprint would hate for you to think they’re left out. They’ve launched the Samsung Intrepid, at first glance a straightforward candybar handset with a full QWERTY keyboard, but which in fact includes a touchscreen and thus runs Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional rather than Standard.
That’s an unusual form-factor, but other than the display – a 2.5-inch 320 x 240 resistive panel – it’s a reasonably straightforward Windows Phone. As well as EVDO Rev.A the Intrepid supports GSM for international use, together with WiFI and Bluetooth, a 3.2-megapixel camera and GPS.
BlackBerry Bold 9700 gets early review: best from RIM yet

That hasn’t stopped the Boy Genius Report from publishing their early review of a pre-production 9700, however, and they’re certainly impressed: in fact, they call the Bold 9700 “the finest BlackBerry ever crafted”.
BlackBerry Tour 9630 returns high as 50% claims analyst [UPDATED]
By Chris Davies on Friday, Sep 18th 2009 No CommentsAccording to research done by analyst David Eller at TownHall Investment Research, return rates of BlackBerry Tour 9630 handsets to Sprint and Verizon might be as high as 50-percent. The most frequent complaint is believed to be problems with the QWERTY smartphone’s trackball, but somewhat bizarrely Eller also claims that people are “complaining about the sensitivity of the touch screen”. We’d suggest that’s probably because the Tour doesn’t actually have a touchscreen.
Celio add BlackBerry support to REDFLY smartphone companions

Select RIM smartphones can now link up to Celio’s REDFLY netbook-style terminals, giving users a bigger display and larger keyboard for easier messaging, working and internet browsing.

An iPhone Arms-Race to Nowhere

In Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, there is a line from the Red Queen, in which she states, “It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place.” In evolution, this is a theory that is also known as an “arms race to nowhere”, in which two different species evolve in tandem, one after the other, in an infinite loop. The reason, is because as one system evolves, then the other must evolve with it, just to keep pace.
And so the system is unending and essential for the survival of a species.
It’s no different in the technology ecosystem. In fact, it’s a lot more evident there, as we can see the fruits of these evolutionary developments as clear as day. We watched as the iPhone became the iPhone 3G, and while it may not have been leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor in a lot of ways, we witnessed the 3G become the 3GS. And in turn, we saw almost every other major phone manufacturer develop phones to counter the iPhone. You’ve heard of them: the mythical iPhone killer.
RIM acquire WebKit browser specialists Torch Mobile

RIM have acquired Torch Mobile, the software developers behind the WebKit-based Iris Browser. The move will see Torch Mobile’s developers working to deliver a new browser to BlackBerry handsets; WebKit is the engine underlying the iPhone’s Mobile Safari and the rendering core of Android handsets. It follows RIM’s revelations that it plans to put full Flash onto its handsets.
Alltel gets Blackberry Tour
