ASUS is reportedly considering merging its mainstream notebook and Eee PC netbook departments, in an attempt to save costs.  The two teams, which up until now have been kept discrete, have already been informed of the consolidation, according to market sources.

We’re still waiting to get some hands-on shots with the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Shell at CeBIT, but until then the official press shots of this super-slinky netbook will keep us ticking over.  ASUS are making it very clear that this isn’t the launch of the 1008HA, only its first unveil, but that’s certainly enough to make us want one.

Further details on ASUS’ rumored luxury netbook, the Eee PC Shell, have emerged, ahead of a predicted launch at CeBIT.  The netbook will be known as the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Shell, with the company focusing on giving it longer battery life than the S101 it replaces.  Meanwhile the company is also believed to be bringing the Eee PC S121 to CeBIT, complete with 512GB SSD and 120GB HDD versions.

After cellphones had their way with the headlines the previous week, the past seven days have been an opportunity for netbooks to race back into the spotlight.  Rumors spread about ASUS’ upcoming Eee PC “Shell” luxury follow-up to the S101, while we saw a slimline version of the Acer Aspire One.  If you want a machine in the more immediate future, though, the Samsung NC20 was made official, and Dell finally launched their Inspiron Mini 10.

ASUS are planning a follow-up to the S101 luxury netbook that will be even thinner, according to the latest rumors out of China.  The ASUS Eee PC Shell, as the high-end netbook is believed to be called, will have a 10.1-inch LCD display, as does the S101, but have higher specifications and offer longer battery life despite the reduced dimensions.

Super Talent have announced a new SSD upgrade kit, intended to make expanding the storage of the ASUS S101 “luxury” netbook more straightforward.  Replacement Mini PCIe boards are available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities; in its stock configuration, the S101 has a 16GB SSD.
