Week in review time again, here we go! The Lenovo IdeaPad Pineview netbook hit the FCC Monday. The FCC is one of the most prolific leaker of gadgets and gear around and we love them for it. The CrunchPad is now said to be steamrolling toward a launch and may have a sponsorship deal in place. Word was a few weeks back that the tablet was dead.

Together they’ve taken the Android-based Archos 5 even closer into MID status: USB host support means that you can plug a full-sized keyboard and mouse into the Mini Dock’s USB port, while the new firmware now supports full-screen YouTube HD playback together with outputting that content, via HDMI, onto your TV.

Archos look to boost Android MID apps with €1 dev deal
By Chris Davies on Friday, Nov 13th 2009 No CommentsWhile we’ve been waiting for integrated 3G and carrier subsidies to bring the cost of the Archos 5 Android Internet Tablet down, if you’ve some developer skills and some time to kill there’s another way to get a cheap deal. Archos have announced a deal whereby developers can – eventually – get an Archos 5 for just €1; all they need to do is whip up an app for the 5-inch touchscreen MID.
Don’t Do It Dell: Think Tablets, Not MIDs

The details are few and far between but the product—code-named Streak—looks like it packs Wi-Fi, 3G and Android 2.0 all into one. It is exactly what Intel has been calling a mobile internet device for the past few years: larger than a smartphone, primarily for accessing the Net, and featuring multimedia and even GPS functionality. The Archos 5 Internet Tablet and the leaked video of the Dell device gives us a better glimpse of what is to come and what it can do. Ironically (and you will see why later), when I watched the video I immediately thought: ah, so Dell wants to make an iPhone with a larger 5-inch screen!
Toshiba 320GB 1.8-inch HDD is world’s biggest

Flash and solid-state drives have been catching up to tiny, 1.8-inch traditional hard-drives in ultramobile applications over the past year or so, but Toshiba don’t think spinning platters are quite outmoded yet. The company have revealed three new 1.8-inch HDDs including the industry’s first 320GB unit, using unique high-density platters that permit data density of 516Gbpsi.
Each of the 3.0Gbps SATA drives spin at 5,400rpm and have 16MB of buffer memory, while there’s apparently less of the high-pitched whine sometimes associated with such HDDs; in fact noise is down between 4 and 5dB over previous models. As well as the 320GB drive, there are 160GB and 250GB versions.

Monday we learned that a new hack was available from the iPhone Dev Team that adds MMS to first generation iPhones and tethering to 3.1.2 OS for the later iPhone models. We also found out that Microsoft is set to issue a new update for the Xbox 360 that will break unauthorized storage devices. That means that some gamers will be unable to access the saved game data after applying the new update.
Archos 9 PCtablet hits shelves today
By Chris Davies on Thursday, Oct 22nd 2009 6 CommentsThe Archos 9 PCtablet has been somewhat overshadowed by its smaller, Android-based sibling, but the French company would like to remind you that, with the debut of Windows 7, the 9-inch touchscreen “future of netbooks” is now available to buy. £449.99 ($748) gets you a resistive touchscreen, Atom Z515 processor and integrated WiFi and Bluetooth, all in a device 800g and just 1.7cm thick.

Archos 5 Android Tablet firmware reportedly stable; Android 1.6 Donut by end of 2009
By Chris Davies on Friday, Oct 16th 2009 No CommentsThe Archos 5 Android Internet Tablet saga continues, with sales of the 5-inch PMP still partly frozen on Amazon while the company has also pushed out a new firmware update. Amazon put the Archos 5 160GB on hold earlier this week after unspecified complaints from buyers; now the 500GB model has come into stock with the retailer, but shows no such sales-freeze. According to ArchosFans, meanwhile, there’s a new, stable firmware – version 1.1.01 – that addresses many early complaints from owners.

According to the product listing, the touchscreen device is “under review”, which Amazon explain could mean anything from shipping errors (wrong device, missing accessories, etc), incorrect item descriptions or, more worryingly, “something wrong with our inventory of the item”, i.e. a problem with the Tablet itself.
Archos 5 160GB and 32GB Android Tablets now shipping in US
By Chris Davies on Friday, Oct 9th 2009 No CommentsHaving gone up for pre-order midway through September, certain models of Archos 5 Android Internet Tablet are now listed as in-stock and ready for delivery by Amazon. The 160GB hard-drive version, together with the 32GB flash model, are both shipping now; however the remaining versions – of which Amazon only list the 500GB tablet – are still only available for preorder.
