The perennial Apple Tablet rumor gets another kink in the tale today, with gossip-gluttons DigiTimes reporting that the company has pushed back the predicted early-2010 launch – which they peg as March – into the second half of the year.  They’re also quoting component manufacturers who tip not one but two Apple Tablets with similarly sized displays: a 10.6-inch LCD TFT and a 9.7-inch OLED version, the latter likely being supplied by LG Display as part of their ongoing five-year $500m panel deal.

Apple’s gaming intent for the iPhone, iPod touch and – potentially – the upcoming Apple Tablet has been further illustrated with a new job listing on the company’s site.  The company is looking for a full-time “Game/Media Software Engineer” with “strong C / C++ / Objective-C / iPhone background” and a “passion” for gaming.  While gaming on the iPod touch has been a strong focus in previous events – Apple describe it as “the funnest iPod ever”, in fact – there’s speculation that the timing of this new post might coincide with developing crossover games titles for the PA Semi powered Apple Tablet.

Apple’s ongoing tablet plans may be shrouded in mystery, but we keep getting snippets of potential from various patent applications from the company.  Latest to be unearthed documents digital ink recognition using a pen-aware system, which tracks full handwritten phrases rather than merely individual strokes.  Apple call it an “ink phrase” engine and it seems to be a sign that the company don’t expect onscreen keyboards and multitouch to serve all of our mobile input scenarios.

Axiotron Modbooks get cheaper

By Chris Davies on Thursday, Nov 12th 2009 1 Comment

Axiotron's Modbook has long been the only semi-official way to get an Apple tablet, with the company taking a pre-unibody MacBook and swiftly twisting it into a Wacom-enabled touchscreen slate.  While we loved our review unit, we weren't too keen on the high price; happily OWC - one of Axiotron's official distribution and conversion agents - have announced a slash of both new and conversion pricing.

Android tablets aren’t exactly uncommon, so we generally reserve our extreme excitement until they actually arrive in stores rather than on display at trade shows touting for business.  Still, when your tablet looks like an iPhone on steroids you’re bound to get some attention, and that’s just what’s happened to Chinese firm Boeye: their MID might run Android but its the striking Apple resemblance (and the estimated budget price tag) that has people excited.

It looks like Dell is planning to release a mobile internet device, or a MID. The details are few and far between but the product—code-named Streak—looks like it packs Wi-Fi, 3G and Android 2.0 all into one. It is exactly what Intel has been calling a mobile internet device for the past few years: larger than a smartphone, primarily for accessing the Net, and featuring multimedia and even GPS functionality. The Archos 5 Internet Tablet and the leaked video of the Dell device gives us a better glimpse of what is to come and what it can do. Ironically (and you will see why later), when I watched the video I immediately thought: ah, so Dell wants to make an iPhone with a larger 5-inch screen!

Apple logo 926391Rumors are circulating that Apple has rejected Intel’s Moorestown chips as unsuitable for their mobile device range, after Cupertino engineers decided that the Intel CPUs demanded far too much power.  According to Fudzilla, Apple have informed Intel that Moorestown needs to have one-tenth the idle power consumption it manages currently before it’ll be suitable for any of Apple’s devices.

The Apple Tablet rumors this week have already been tenuous and, well, more tenuous, so let's throw another vaguely unbelievable tidbit into the ring.  According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Apple have been shopping around their tablet to Australian media companies, "in an effort to sound out whether they would be interested in delivering their content to the tablet."  The paper suggests that Apple have been sending around details of the tablet's specifications; however none of the media companies themselves would talk on the record.
