It’s been a rainstorm of Archos 5 Internet Tablet newness over at UMPC Portal today, with our friend Steve Paine taking delivery not only of the Archos 5 Mini Dock but the latest firmware which has also released today, v1.3.07.  Together they’ve taken the Android-based Archos 5 even closer into MID status: USB host support means that you can plug a full-sized keyboard and mouse into the Mini Dock’s USB port, while the new firmware now supports full-screen YouTube HD playback together with outputting that content, via HDMI, onto your TV.

ZiiLABS’ ZMS-08 chipset was certainly enough to get us interested last week – the promise of a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, Blu-ray quality video playback and parent company Creative’s X-Fi audio tech will do that to a geek – and now they’ve gone and got us hot under the collar with the promise of an Android smartphone.  Set to be demonstrated at the Zii Summit 2009, to be held in China on December 1st, the device is described as a Zii Optimized Android Phone platform, albeit based on the (still pretty impressive) ZMS-05 chipset.

Meizu’s M8 started out as a comedy iPhone clone and gradually developed its own – at least partial – identity; now some earnest modders have given it a complete OS upgrade.  Out went Windows CE, to be replaced by Google’s Android platform, though it’s still very early days and you lose more than just the original UI in the process.

HTC HD2 review

By Chris Davies on Friday, Nov 6th 2009 15 Comments

Twelve months ago HTC shook up the Windows Mobile world with the launch of the Touch HD, a smartphone that offered a vast touchscreen, lashings of connectivity and the latest version of their UI tweaking, TouchFLO 3D, to produce what was hitherto thought impossible: an alluring Windows Phone. Now, the company have attempted just such a revolution with Windows Mobile 6.5 in the shape of the HTC HD2. They’ve upped their game with a speedy Snapdragon processor, even vaster display and a fresh UI that’s been educated by their recent work on Android. Can the HTC HD2 again do the unthinkable, and give us a reason to love Windows Mobile?

The MOTO Development Group is no stranger to Android – they showcased an Android-based e-ink prototype a while back – and now they’re cashing in on that familiarity with a number of new devices targeted at developers.  The MOTO Android Media Platform will eventually consist of three models – 3.5-, 5- and 10.4-inches – each with OLED displays as standard, OMAP processors and capacitive multitouch-capable touchscreens.

toshiba 320gb hddFlash and solid-state drives have been catching up to tiny, 1.8-inch traditional hard-drives in ultramobile applications over the past year or so, but Toshiba don’t think spinning platters are quite outmoded yet.  The company have revealed three new 1.8-inch HDDs including the industry’s first 320GB unit, using unique high-density platters that permit data density of 516Gbpsi.

Each of the 3.0Gbps SATA drives spin at 5,400rpm and have 16MB of buffer memory, while there’s apparently less of the high-pitched whine sometimes associated with such HDDs; in fact noise is down between 4 and 5dB over previous models.  As well as the 320GB drive, there are 160GB and 250GB versions.

The Archos 5 Android Internet Tablet saga continues, with sales of the 5-inch PMP still partly frozen on Amazon while the company has also pushed out a new firmware update.  Amazon put the Archos 5 160GB on hold earlier this week after unspecified complaints from buyers; now the 500GB model has come into stock with the retailer, but shows no such sales-freeze.  According to ArchosFans, meanwhile, there’s a new, stable firmware – version 1.1.01 – that addresses many early complaints from owners.
