It used to be that only the smallest, most frugal of netbooks – paired with huge, 9-cell batteries – could offer the reassurance of a full day away from an outlet. Now, with the advent of Intel’s consumer ultra-low voltage processors, notebooks that wouldn’t look out of place on a regular desk can now boast lengthy run-times too. Into the fray steps the Gateway EC5409u, distinguishing itself not only by virtue of healthy battery life predictions – up to 8hrs, Gateway ambitiously suggest – but a reasonably-sized 15.6-inch display. Acer have pushed a few new notebooks and thin-&-lights out of the door this past week, but their Italian arm have been saving something a little more special.  The Acer Aspire 1820PT Timeline is an 11.6-inch convertible touchscreen ultraportable, packing a 16:9 1366 x 768 multitouch display, 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor and optional integrated 3G.  NetbookItalia grabbed some hands-on time, and the 1820PT Timeline certainly looks

Acer isn’t the only one with touch on the brain today, with Toshiba outing a range of new Windows 7 laptops of which two offer a multitouch display.  The Toshiba Satellite U505 Touch (U505-S2980-T) and Satellite M505 Touch (M505-S4990-T) have 13.3-inch and 14-inch displays respectively, both use Intel’s Core 2 Duo T6600 2.2GHz processor with 4GB of memory (8GB max) and pack 500GB hard-drives.  Toshiba also load on their own touch-friendly software, including the Bulletin Board organizer and digital media display, and the ReelTime timeline-based history.

HP’s leaked consumer device catalog at the end of September warned us that the company had a new, 11.6-inch CULV notebook in the works, and sure enough HP Japan have just announced the new machine.  The HP Pavilion DM1 gets a dual-core 1.2GHz Intel Celeron SU2300 processor along with 2GB of RAM (5GB supported), a 250GB 5,400rpm hard-drive and Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset.

It’s not quite the multitouch marvel, but Acer’s new 11.6-inch Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ does at least share the Windows 7 underpinnings of the company’s other new models today.  The CULV ultraportable uses Intel’s dual-core processors and promises over 8hrs of runtime from the standard 6-cell battery.

After spending most of Friday curled in a ball twitching and drooling after losing power and Internet access for almost 12 hours, I am glad to be back online and in the 21st century again. Just in time to hunker down and dose myself with a nice helping of week in review for your perusal. Chris reviewed the GSM Palm Pre and found the camera wasn't as good as some of its peers but found plenty to like in the end. The webOS operating system stands apart from rival OS'. Buffalo announced the HD-HU3 USB 3.0 drive and controller that will be shipping in Japan this month. The drive isn’t even that expensive; I hope it comes to America too.

If Acer’s Aspire 1410T (aka the Timeline 1810T) took your fancy but you’re a multitouch convert, how about a convertible tablet version of the same ultraportable notebook?  macles have spotted the Acer Aspire Timeline 1820T, ostensibly the same 11.6-inch 1,366 x 768 notebook with an Intel CULV 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo SU3500 processor and 2GB of RAM, but gaining a rotating screen hinge and a multitouch-capable touchscreen.

Last year people took to the skies in order to try to clinch Acer's Want One? Win One competition; this year the stakes have been raised to an Acer Aspire Timeline notebook capable of an estimated 8hrs of runtime from a single charge.  The new Eight Hour Contest is calling for would-be Timeline winners to shoot a video explaining what they'd do with all that runtime; the public will vote and the most popular will get not only the ultraportable but a trip to CES 2010 and more.

Acer’s latest ultraportable notebook, the Aspire 1410 – the US version of the Timeline 1810T – has shown up for sale at CostCentral.  Priced at a reasonable $460.33, the 11.6-inch 1,366 x 768 notebook packs an Intel CULV 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo SU3500 processor and 2GB of RAM into a slimline casing strikingly similar to that of the Acer Aspire One 751h we reviewed yesterday.

It’s probably fair to say that we haven’t been particularly impressed with what we’ve heard about Acer’s Aspire One 751. The phrase “pretty but dumb” has been muttered more than once, an aesthetically pleasing machine but one lacking in processing power. So when Acer offered us the latest version, the AO751h-1522, we jumped at the opportunity to see how it holds up to our own exacting standards. Check out the full review after the cut
