Radio-controlled cars might not seem the most obvious place to mount a server, but JokerWorks disagree: the company has unveiled what they’re calling the world’s first Linux server for R/C cars, the Joker Racer R/C Server, easily allowing for remote internet-linked control.  To keep things simple, the Joker Racer unit hooks up to the standard servo cables already in the R/C car, together with an off-the-shelf webcam.

Acer have pushed out their Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone range, and they’ve segmented the handsets into two different categories.  The Acer beTouch line is intended for style-conscious, “trendy” users, while the Acer neoTouch line are more serious, high-end devices.  Four models have been announced, the beTouch E100, E101 and E200, and the neoTouch S200 (aka the Acer F1).

Acer look to be following in the footsteps of HTC, with the company rumored to be planning to shift much of its focus from Windows Mobile to Android.  According to the usual, shadowy “industry sources” that hang out in the bars DigiTimes frequents, Acer intends at least half of its new handsets in 2010 to be based on the Google-led Android platform.

In case you missed something this week, it’s time for another week in review for you to enjoy on a lazy Sunday. Asus quietly let the Eee 1201N Ion netbook slip from the bowels of the netbook kingpin. The machine sports NVIDIA Ion power, it’s nice to see more Ion netbooks coming to market. Acer has its line of smartphones coming in Q4 according to reports early this week. The Acer F1 and the HTC Leo will hit in Q4.

Having seen the HTC Leo frolicking with the HTC Touch Pro2 and the Diamond2, it only seems fair that HTC’s Android-powered Hero should get a turn in the leaky spotlight.  Over at xda-developers, a purported beta tester of the Leo has been sharing some first impressions and the images to go with it.

Acer’s F1 smartphone was tipped to drop on October 6th by DigiTimes yesterday, and now the company themselves have confirmed that the 1GHz Windows Mobile handset will arrive “within weeks”.  In fact, the handset will apparently arrive in time for the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5, itself expected on October 6th, and while they’re being coy on full specs, they have confirmed that retailer Clove’s technical run-down is accurate.

The latest DigiTimes rumors are in, and this time they don’t seem all that unlikely.  According to industry sources in Taiwan, Acer’s F1 and HTC’s Leo – both using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz chipset – will each drop in Q4 this year, complete with Windows Mobile 6.5.  They also finger ASUS and Inventec as developing Snapdragon-based smartphones, though those are unlikely to hit full-scale production until the first half of 2010.

Acer is a big sponsor of the Ferrari F1 team and as such, the company has been making special edition Ferrari notebooks for a while. The thing most of the Ferrari editions have in common is improved performance and a big price tag.

Acer haven’t been especially shy about their smartphone plans but, according to the latest leaks over in Taiwan, the company could be closer to launching their range than originally suspected.  The Acer F1 shown here – together with the A1, C1/E1 and L1 – will apparently arrive “at the end of September and in the fourth quarter of this year”.
