iPhone still dominates US says NPD (with phablets the losers)

iPhone still dominates US says NPD (with phablets the losers)

Suggestions that Apple needs to make a big-screen iPhone if it wants to stay relevant in the US may be premature, NPD data indicates, with the 4-inch iOS handset dominating smartphone sales in 2013 as "phablets" took only a small slice of the pie. Price and brand cachet are seen as two key reasons for sluggish adoption of phones with screens 5.3-inches or bigger, such as Samsung's Galaxy Note line, with handsets in that category amounting for just 4-percent of overall smartphone sales in Q4 in the US.

Call of Duty and Skylanders keep Activision in NPD’s top spots for 2013

There's a couple of games appearing in NPD's tracking of video games for the end of 2013 that put Activision in a rather healthy spot for entering in this year's full range of releases. With Call of Duty: Ghosts, Activision sees the #1 Top-Selling Next Gen Title through 2013 - that's both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, while it remains the best-selling title overall in December as well. Meanwhile Skylanders - as a video game franchise - won best-selling of the entire year for the kids video games category.

Touch-notebooks to suck some tablet sting from Post-PC says NPD

A rise in convertible and slider touchscreen form-factors will offset the "post-PC era" slide of notebooks, but will be unable to fend off the full might of tablets, new research suggests. Tablet shipments will rise to 579.4m units by 2017, NPD DisplaySearch projections indicate, while traditional notebooks will drop to 183.3m units by the same point. However, a new breed of touch-enabled notebooks will step in to help arrest some of the slump.

Pew Research and NPD suggest tablets replacing e-readers and traditional print

Pew Research and NPD suggest tablets replacing e-readers and traditional print

According to NPD analyst Stephen Baker, it's "the beginning of the end" for traditional e-readers, and according to Pew Research's most recent findings, it's full-color tablets that are replacing the segment - with traditional print dying out as well. According to Pew's newest survey, 23% of Americans ages 16 and older say they've read a real e-book over the past 12 months, this number jumping 16% compared to last year. This number becomes especially significant given their finding that number of people (16 and up) that read a printed book in the same amount of time fell 5% year-over-year.
