The promise of a sub-$1k full-sized Tablet PC is a tempting one, especially with students eyeing up the latest hardware with the Fall semester fast approaching.  HP are well known for their pen-computing range, and while headlines this week have focused on the new 2730p, complete with Centrino 2 technology, its their cheaper Pavilion tx2500z that will likely find more buyers.  Initial hands-on suggested this could be a Tablet to watch out for, and Tablet PC Review are back with a thorough review of the Puma-powered machine.

Fujitsu aren’t the only company putting Centrino 2 tech into a Tablet PC.  HP have unveiled their own updated notebook, the 2730p, which replaces the popular but venerable 2710p.  With a smaller display than the T5010 – at 12.1-inches – the 2730p will arguably be a little more portable; however it may run a little slower, too, as HP have picked Intel’s 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo L9400 processor.

Comparing Tablet PCs can be a tricky task, since they’re still relatively rare out in the real world.  And when someone finally does find one and buy it, they could feasibly never come into contact with another and never get the opportunity to see how it stands up against rivals.  So, it’s entirely possible that HP’s 2710p and Lenovo’s ThinkPad X61 might never have met on the battle-field, except for the fact that the Houston Chronicle’s Dwight Silverman decided to pull the two Tablet PCs in for a head-to-head.

It’s still no tc1100 replacement, but HP Compaq’s latest Tablet PC is likely to win some hearts nevertheless going from its reception after appearing on the FCC site. We first heard of it at the beginning of the year, and even saw pre-production versions a few months ago, but with FCC approval it can’t be far from sale. Rocking WiFi in a/b/n flavours, Bluetooth and an optional HSDPA or EV-DO cellular broadband module (hence the dinky aerial poking out of the top), it promises seamless connectivity which is always a plus when coupled with a mobile design.

HP 2710p live in action

Despite all the convertible notebooks I’ve seen, the sight of someone flipping a display from traditional laptop round to folded slate still gives me a shiver of glee. Sadly that’s the one thing missing from this video hands-on of HP’s new 2710p Tablet PC by Notebooks.com, though they do show the interesting business-card scanning function and the expansion batteries.

HP’s tc4400 convertible Tablet PC might not have captured the hearts of vintage tc1100 tableteers, but it did succeed in bringing reasonably spec’d pen-computing into the hands of a cost-conscious general public.  Now the company is hoping for a double-whammy with their new convertible, the 2710p, due for release in July this year.
