Many have accused Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) as being gadgets in dire search of a purpose, and despite Intel’s push for the segment the talk out of Taipei is that the ultraportable touchscreen handhelds are having a difficult time finding traction among manufacturers.  DigiTimes is reporting that several companies originally signed up to Intel’s Mobile Internet Device Innovation Alliance (MIDIA) have axed MID development, while those manufacturers who have actually shipped devices have only done so in numbers described as “very weak”.

It looks like Dell is planning to release a mobile internet device, or a MID. The details are few and far between but the product—code-named Streak—looks like it packs Wi-Fi, 3G and Android 2.0 all into one. It is exactly what Intel has been calling a mobile internet device for the past few years: larger than a smartphone, primarily for accessing the Net, and featuring multimedia and even GPS functionality. The Archos 5 Internet Tablet and the leaked video of the Dell device gives us a better glimpse of what is to come and what it can do. Ironically (and you will see why later), when I watched the video I immediately thought: ah, so Dell wants to make an iPhone with a larger 5-inch screen!

Adobe have upgraded their Flash offensive, with the news this week that the next version – Flash 10.1 – will run across not only desktop but mobile and smartphone platforms.  Taking advantage of the Open Screen Project (OSP), the new version will arrive as a Windows Mobile and webOS beta before the year is out, while early in 2010 we’ll get Android and Symbian versions.  Finally, while there’s no release date for 10.1 yet given, RIM have signed up to the OSP meaning BlackBerry devices will also get Flash support.

Intel may still be pushing their vision of MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) but that doesn’t mean everyone is singing from the same song-sheet.  SMiT and Optima have both been showing off their attempts at compact handheld web-access devices, the former slapping Android onto a 4.8-inch touchscreen tablet while the latter has picked Maemo for their 4.3-inch MID.  Meanwhile SmartQ’s Q5 and Q7 are both seeing development of various mobile platforms.

We just talked about the JournE, the new Mobile Internet Device (MID) from Toshiba. We still have a relative lack of information regarding the details of the device, but if the media playback of HD videos, plus an emphasis on streaming online videos via sites like YouTube isn’t enough to get you excited, we don’t know what will. Truth be told, the MID-range of devices is pretty, well, mid-range, but from what we are seeing now, especially by the excitement displayed in the video after the break, we can’t help but get even more excited.

The way of the tablet has been a rocky road, but it looks like all of that is beginning to change. Sure, Apple’s anticipated launch into the tablet market is helping to stroke the flames, but as long as it keeps promoting other companies to create things like Toshiba’s JounE, let’s just call it a win-win for everybody.

Ent 236x180 customBack at the beginning of the month, we had a whole slew of Android information come swirling into our offices. We did our best to cover it, and part of that coverage was this little piece of Mobile Internet Device (MID) Heaven. It’s a pretty slick, piano-black piece of tech that’s running some might Android goodness. And, despite the coverage we splattered all over it before, we were lacking any real live shots of the device. Well, now’s as good a time for change as any other, right?

It might not mean much to the Android smartphone lurking in your pocket (or that you’d like to have there), but MIPS and Sigma Designs have been demonstrating an Android-based set-top box capable of 1080p high-definition video.  The STB prototype is being positioned as “a major milestone toward the creation of a reference platform” for Android-powered home entertainment devices, with the two companies adding support for Sigma’s hardware graphics acceleration and decoding.

We’re still waiting for LG’s Q3 2009 launch of the BL40 “Chocolate” phone, so until then we’ll have to make do with stolen time and sneaky glimpses of the elongated touchscreen featurephone.  Dan from Mobiles dropped us a line to let us know that they had just such a video, showing the BL40’s S-Class UI and navigating through the various multimedia features.

It may seem that HTC gets a large slice of the pie when it comes to mobile phone news and rumors, and maybe that's not too far from the truth. But when you have this many phones coming out, from all sorts of networks and operating systems, then it's hard to ignore. Here's the HTC Leo having another go around the internet, but this time it's looking a little different.
