The 80GB Playstation 3 finally has a release date and pricing for Australia. The gaming system will hit Australian store shelves this month right alongside the US.

The 80GB PS3 is expected to go on sale August 28th in Australia, the same day as in US store. Rumors suggest the system will run Australian customers $699 (AUD). Currently the 40GB version of the PS3 sells for the same price in Australia ($699 AUD), making the 80GB upgrade an obvious choice for Australian consumer. We could of course see a price drop with the 40GB come the end of the month when the 80GB becomes available.

The PS3 will still be priced slightly more expensive than its Xbox counterpart. The Xbox 360 Elite with a 120GB hard drive currently sells in Australia for a cool $649 AUD.

Keep in mind that the newly priced 80Gig will not be backwards compatible. Apparently they will still offer an 80gig with ps2 compatibility but it will still be more expensive.
