More on the PlayStation 3’s upcoming launch; this will either be good or bad depending on your point of view and PS3 purchasing plans. Sony now plans to release 1.2 million PS3 consoles before the end of the year; as we reported earlier, however, only 400,000 consoles will be available for the console’s November launch here in the US. Furthermore, it’s now been established that 80% of the consoles produced before the end of the year will be the more expensive, 60 GB PS3 variety; as a quick math aside that means that only 80,000 of the initial 400,000 console stock will be the cheaper PS3.

PS3

This isn’t a surprising move for Sony; like the Xbox 360, the more advanced but more expensive console is predicted to be the more popular of the PS3 consoles. While some users who can’t afford the more expensive system might be upset over this imbalance, more $500 PS3s should be upcoming after the end of 2006. So, if you really must have a cheaper PS3, it might be best to wait until Sony ups their production quantities.
