Not sure if anyone noticed the date on the orginal post with the picture of the bot.
It was TWO YEARS AGO.
there are dozens of 3d printers on the market now, including a huge 3d printer in europe, thatprints object upmto 10 feet in height.
Most of them printing very nice precision parts.
The future passed this artical by.

I think 3D printing with slowly move forward. Step by step. i.e. The iPad wasn't created the day after the transistor. Where will 3D printing be in the next 5 years? Answer: We'll find out! Keep your eyes peeled, and let's not get ahead of ourselves. We'll worry about printing leather shoes and meat in the shape of a dinosaur far down the road. Right now, let's try to get a nice surface finish.

P.S. Love the picture by the way. Hysterical :)

If you want to really do anything creative, then you must learn to use 3D software and create your own model instead of ready to print file. I'm considering buying one of these but it really have no commercial value as far as price go. The time it took for it to print a model is longer than the time for me to make a details clay model and make a mold out of that.

This here is the future, like smartphones were the future but are here now and getting refined every day. When the public start jumping on these 3d printers, then all tech for them will explode like it did for smartphones. I want one now, but i will give it another 12 months for the product to become a bit more refined and cheaper. How good is this technology. I can think of tons of things i could make with one of these things.

Even the top end 3D printers have difficulty producing a part strong enough to be used for anything more than "Prototype testing" before being made properly.

The idea that goods will be just a download away is rubbish unless you want a desk full of poor Happy meal toy imitations.
