This Wilson just likes to hear himself speak. You can currently download a torrent with prints to make guns on mills and lathes. This isn't about 3D printing. I use Fortus and Dimension printers daily, and real CAD systems. This is about his world political views and he sounds like a blowhard who is full of himself and spent to much time discussing things around college campus coffee shops or occupy rallies. Don't give this guy your money so he can 'free the world with technology.' He's selling snake oil. Giving everyone the ability to print their own gun is as idealistic as Alfred Nobel creating dynamite to end all war.
I'm going to fire up the Fortus right now, print myself a coffee mug, and free myself from the evil and corrupt system of worldwide pottery studios.

Stratasys just made a big fool of themselves. Now when many use 3D printers to make the parts of guns that can be made with 3D printers, Stratasys won't be the company the consumer buys from. Very politically correct and very stupid.

Well... you can't do the complete pistol...

There has to be steel in several places. Efforts to make polymer receiver ARs have proven difficult. Even for major manufactureres.

The guys that had the printer taken away were trying to make a complete pistol, the AR pictured is from another group that just did the lower receiver. That's why I thought they tried to print the whole AR.

First: An AR-15 is not an "Assault Rifle"... It is a semi-auto rifle... And don't say "AR" is an acronym for it... AR stands for Armalite... the original makers of the rifle.

Making firearms in your home or personal shop is not illegal... so long as it is for personal use only and you NEVER sell it.

People have been doing this for years... no serial numbers and no paperwork... Thousands of ARs have been made at home using simple tools and a basic drill press. (yet you don't see unserialized rifle apocalypses raging across the US...)

Its legal because making it illegal is... illegal... or more appropriately unconstitutional...

And it doesn't just apply to firearms, because firearm ownership is legal in the US, just like owning a rocking chair. So any law preventing making one for personal use is no different than making a law preventing you from making a rocking chair... from a legal and constitutional level.

Why would they go with a more complex design like the AR when an SK/AK style is much more simple and can already be built with little more than a lathe?
