Funny you think of it as the "modern-day version of quadraphonic sound", since in fact, surround sound (a modern version of quad sound) has been highly successful and included in every theater-bound movie made since the 90s.

Just proves that previously-failed technologies can evolve into something truly useful and commonplace.

"No one can argue that the convergence / focus issue isn’t a problem"

Well, it isn't. First, our eyes do not need to focus at two points, simply because there's no way for our eyes to know that they have been presented with different images. Second, even if there is an unnatural element in 3D TV/cinema, our brains can easily get trained to it.

I guess some backwards know-it-all could have claimed that having 24 pictures flashed before your eyes in one second is deadly dangerous a 100 years ago... Somehow, mankind survived.

Why would I take the word of a movie editor about technology anyway? It's not like his Oscars make him a specialist on novel video technologies...

It's a shame Roger Ebert thinks his opinion matters in 2011, The guy has spent most of the last 20 years fighting cancer and all he comes up with is 3D won't work? I hate to say it Roger but your opinion holds no water. The big companies know better that's why the internet is turning 3D Games 3D and Mobile 3D I have been in the video production business for 32 years and finally the judgment days have arrived. 3D is beautiful when used correctly, How can you say 3D won't work when you see your life everyday in 3D ? That is absolutely absurd, Not sure if you know this Rog but the 3DMobileNetwork is fast approaching. In the next 2 years 50 percent of Mobile Phones will have 3D displays, 60 million 3D Mobile Phones will be in play, Does that sound like something that ain't working.
You should have retired along time ago and these statements prove it.
