Hi,
We used the term "super phone" for MobileBeat for two reasons.
1) As one of the commenters rightly noted Eric Schmidt termed the Nexus a "super phone".
2) In more detail, Rob Glaser from Real Networks had a fantastic presentation on the "super phone" in March ... also, Erik Tseng who was running was Nexus product at that time was on our Advisory Board ... the debates with our board on that topic were so interesting that we picked the term "super phone" to be our guiding theme for our conference.

Check out the Verizon and the Samsung presentations at MobileBeat for further context.

I believe the smart/super phones would easily kill the fledging tablet category if someone created a viable, wearable microdisplay.

Tablets and smartphones seemingly have the same powerful ARM processors nowadays (except for the very rare and unsuccessful Win7 tablets which use Atoms).

ARM tablets only differ from smartphones in their bigger screens which in fact is one of their biggest disadvantage since it makes them less compact and mobile.

when desktop computers gained the ability to play audio and display full colour images, they were called...desktop computers. when they gained the ability to play standard definition video, they were called...desktop computers. when they gained the ability to play high definition video and had dual-core and 4-core CPUs, they were still called....desktop computers.

amazingly, despite a lack of gimmicky names invented by 'analysts', consumers managed to choose the desktop computer which suited them.

i don't know a single person who refers to their iphone or android handsets as their 'smartphone', they just call it their 'phone'.

imagine that.

don't let me stop you with your use of 'superphone' though, if there's anything the gadget world needs more of, it's buzzwords.

In today's world technology has moved to such an extent that almost all the phones would be called a smartphone and the rate at which they are being upgraded with some extended features is indeed noteworthy so any new phone that enters the market should be different names so as to differentiate it from the others. If there were some many of them in 2010 what would the situation be like in 2011.

LG has already announced that the Tegra2 dual core processor will be powering their Windows Phone 7 handsets. With everything that this high performing phone will be asked to do, it's a very wise choice. The OS and UI should be buttery smooth and quick.

Thanks for your comments. I thought this was more clear then it was when I wrote it up but I clarified it now in the post.

What I was referring to is calling Super Phones a new category of devices. We analysts like to think in terms of categories and have been speaking about all these devices as smartphones. What I want to champion is that we call these new mobile devices something other then smartphones from a categorical standpoint.

Particularly since in the next 8 month's it is likely that smartphones will out pace PC's in terms of annual shipments. Yet these new devices will have dual cores and basically have PC class power in your pocket. I strongly think it is a new category and that is what I am referring to.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I meant as it relates to a new category of devices. We as analysts often think in terms of categories and executives do this as well. We have all been referring to these as smartphones and what I am getting at is that we need to call them something else.

Thanks for the thoughts.

To the writer... I don't mean to be unkind, but the term Super Phone has been bandied around for at least 5 years on a regular basis. The first time I ran across it was in regards to cell phones getting customized ring tones, which allowed people to put the "You've Got Mail" AOL soundbite on to notify everyone around you that you'd just received an email to your cell. "WOW"!!! This was the first reference to a "Super Phone" that I personally ever run across, but since then, the term has been used widely, with a massive uptick as touch sensitive phones which were effectively computers came into play. As another writer has also mentioned, google has heavily leaned into the superphone concept for 9 months now with their Nexus one.

If you're only just hearing of the concept a month ago, it makes it a little hard to accept you as having a lot of industry experience.

You probably meant "LG announced they have an aggressive plan to release upwards of 15 phones . . ." "Aggressively releasing" means throwing the phones at prospective customers while shouting invectives.
