I gave up cable tv several years ago and I gave up movies on physical media a couple years ago other than for ripping. Where I can find it on Netflix Streaming that's what I usually watch. Otherwise I'll get the disc from Netflix and rip it myself. The only reason to rip the content myself is because content owners are to stupid to license it to Netflix.

One weakness in the streaming model is that you can't watch when you don't have adequate network access so I also rip a lot of children's shows so that my daughter has several days worth of varied content to pick through when we go on long road trips. I'd love to be able to download Netflix content to my device even if it would expire after a certain number of days if not re-connected to an active Netflix account.

I made the switch to Blu-ray last year, but I'm not replacing my old DVDs. After looking at my collection of 50 DVDs or so, all I could think of is what a waste. Not a waste in the sense that I can't still enjoy them; my Blu-ray player does a good enough job of upconverting them, but a waste in that I've only watched them maybe once or twice.

I realized that except for a very select few of my favorites, I don't want to own movies (or TV shows, etc) - I want access to them. I'd rather pay a nominal fee every month for a service that lets me have access to what I want to watch, then buy something that will probably never watch again. Media and format changes won't matter as long as my current hardware can play them.

This is complete and utter bs.

"That said, I’ve spent the past year replacing much of my DVD content with Blu-ray versions of the titles. I already have a copy of The Godfather Trilogy on DVD, but I bought the Blu-ray version to round out my collection. I did the same with several other favorites, including Saving Private Ryan."

You have illustrated the whole point of blu-rays and material formats like blu-ray & DVD as a fallacy, something I'm sure wasn't intentional at all, but you still managed it anyway. Hence you get no credit for bringing it up, because such revelation was illegitimate.

DVDs are dying, but they have already vastly outlived VHS, just as CDs outlived the usefulness of VHS's cousin in the music world. The ONLY thing that Blu-ray has at the moment, which isn't so much an infrastructural problem as it is a technological one, is HD.

Now, obviously, that might warrant special consideration in certain cases, but you shallowly place it above all others. I bet your revisionist attitude is happy forking over $100's on George Lucas's decennial Star Wars releases because it has better quality.

Case in point, there are arguments to be made for blu-ray, and even if it is a physical media format, which is slated to die, the web simply hasn't caught up to the storage and quality of it yet. (This will, of course, change; streaming is the future, through and through.)

You are a tool of the MPAA and Sony if you insist that blu-ray will be anything but a niche product in the future. Most people I know have the same movie now on VHS, DVD, DVD special edition/HD-DVD/Blu-ray. I think you are overestimating their patience with paying for content they've already bought. It's no different than music's digital subscription model that we're only just now starting to see mature.

So please, don't spew this obvious bias on Slashgear. This site is better than faulty, superficial analysis.

Troll-

You give the Sopranos as an example of something not worth watching except in HD? Some things would still not be worth watching even if we had immersive 3D HD.

What is wrong with you?

Sounds like you would only appreciate a book if it had the right font and page size.

Presentation isn't everything.

People like you help make entertainment the boring fluff it is today.

Many of us yearn for the excitement we felt watching black & white 60's era TV as a kid - they were in reruns even then, but I still catch them occasionally late at night and via satellite.

They were fresh and creative.
The had style.
And, boy, could they tell a story!

I started my BR collection when the stuff is on sale. I never paid full retail price for any movie because it's pretty pricey (hopefully it get better in 2011). I have no regret owning them because the picture quality is far superior to that of DVD.

Amen. I'll even go a step further and just say that I've been 100% digital for the past couple years. 720p movies are readily available online, even more so then SD now. There's literally not one DVD or Bluray case/disc in my entire home, and hasn't been for several years!
